Toyota’s Latest Problem: Possessed Lexus Steering

Now, as far as we know, this IS350's issue could have been caused by the owner, a poster at My.IS. running over a herd of cats and not just a fundamental Toyota design flaw, but a user over at the forum Club Lexus currently has the same problem.

There was a courtesy campaign (i.e. a non-recall recall) for IS model power steering but, according to a tech on the site, this didn't involve replacing the sensor that could be causing this problem. Given Toyota's recent track record, we bet this clip will be causing a national scandal on CNN within the hour.

Anyone have any idea what could cause this?

UPDATE: It appears, from comments and in talking to a Toyota/Lexus employee, that it's possible the instillation of aftermarket HID headlights without the proper surge protection could be responsible for frying a sensor or part of the electronics system. This is only speculation, but all the vehicles involved so far seem to have installed the lights.

why you need HID kit on lexus? arent all of them have HID from factory?

Some people want to change the color of their bulbs. I for one would love to stand out from the thousands of ISx50's in SoCal if I had one. Hence why I added HIDs to my 2010 Camry, which is just as common as IS's lol...

you dont need to get hid kit for that. just get D2s or D4s bulbs in different color and thats all

you know that for a fact? :) FYI toyota and lexus use D4S, D4R type bulbs which output about 600 more lumens then d2s and d2r bulbs found in all other makes, i think GM uses d3r/d3s but not sure what output on those are.
d2s output is 3200lumens at 4300K color temp (philips 85122(+)
    d4s output is 3800lumens at 4800k color temp (42406 Philips D4R/D4S)

BWM hids suck, their projectors suck even more, best projectors are made by Kioto and stanley which are found on acuras, lexus and some other makes.

best projectors are considered S2000 for single beam. TL, FX35 are one of best bixenon projectors
LS430 projectors are widest beam projectors out there (havent seen GT-R projectors though)

i would not messed around with swaping bulbs thought. couse presure inside that little globe is 1500PSI, it it blows up, its known to have whole headlight blow up, checked ebay and they do have d4s aftermarket bulbs but you know quaiity of those

I've checked them side by side and compared them to my '05 Acura RL, Lexus HID turned out just slightly brighter then regular halogens...Very weak light...as a matter of fact it is very hard to tell from the distance that Lexus even has HIDs...far away from my Infiniti after market 6500 (35 watt) Bi-xenon HID (don't remember the brand)...
by the way, not sure what you don't like about BMW xenon lights, but I have '04 325Ci with projectors, and absolutely love them! Unlike on my Acura BMW projectors swivel up and down, left to right, where Acura only left to right...both BMW and Acura been in a family for 4 years, and no issues with projectors... I do agree with you on S2000 projectors, love that razor sharp line the cut out!
I don't know, dude...some people say German cars have all the problems, but within 4 years of ownership BMW (325) was taken for repairs only twice, while my Acura was taken 7 or 8 times, which was kinda dissapointing...

reason i dont like bwm once is couse of design and everything(i look for width and intensity in projectors) a lot of ppl dont like those projectors when choosing what to retrofit into their cars couse of their performance so autoleveling and sided to side dont play role in it), hella and bosch need to step up their design.
which lexus did you compare it to? (IS series suck, i think only once that were good were SC430 but even then only with clear lens swap). i have pair of TLs, LS430, G35 and RL projectors that im planning to retrofit into my headlights, im retroing RLs into my friends accord aftermarket headlights.

i have FX35 with TSX clear lenses in my foglights as running lights with 50W philips bulbs and they are pretty damn bright

reliabilty of cars varies, it just how you take care of it and maintanance, if you beat the hell out of it then its not gona last long no matter which make it is

My wife has an 03 IS300 and we love the HIDs on it. Not only are they bright, but I love the white color and also the auto leveling. cool when you hit the brakes and the car front drops, the headlights aim up, then when you hit the gas and the front lifts, they aim down.
