buy a better router lol or turn off all the services like SPI firewall, etc especially upnp which increases the load alot
you can also turn off DHCP server and then set all your IPs yourself.

Yeah, for whatever reason, routers have too much BS already enabled from the factory. Disable the firewall, any traffic shaping/QoS services as those will literally cap your bandwith and they get very nosey when it comes to constant in/out traffic such as when playing a game. Make sure no ports are blocked, a lot of times the factory settings on the router leave certain ports open for certain games and programs that utilize those ports. Disabling firewall and disabling any blocked ports and traffic shaping will ensure consistent traffic flow.

If you are concerned about viruses and such, use a software-driven firewall. They are much easier to manage, only downside is that you have to keep on top of each computer's software-driven firewall independantly.

just a little update. the problems definitely that the dlink router cant handle the traffic. if all the other computers in the house are off and im on my toshiba, theres no issue. guess ill pick up a better router and see how that goes.

routers are getting worse n worse imo
you really gotta spend the $$$ for a reliable one that doesn't die due to heavy traffic especially from the bit torrent where multiple connections are opened and extra load is on the router
the general trend of routers are as follows
    cheap and underpowered
    expensive and overheats
    mid priced but crappy firmware
expensive and overheats and has crappy firmware
cheap and overheats and breaks very soon

could you recommend a router with a good balance of performance and reliability (ohhhh, and price)?

id have to say such combination doesnt really exist by my experience LOL
even the linksys/cisco 310N i have was flueky until i installed a custom firmware (dd-wrt) which improved its performance but the legacy support for G devices is still flakey sometimes. It does suffer from overheating issues as with most linksys/cisco products out there, if you can sort the heat problem (by adding some elongated legs to the bottom) you're pretty safe with their E2000 line.
I have also tried Buffalo's N-finiti router and definitely lacks in performance at times. Belkin routers are also real flakey, I had their top of the line mimo N router and it had trouble differentiating itself with another router around the area. Asus routers... dead on box opening and quickly dies after exchange from my old roommate's experience. In summary, most big brand router manufacturers had their problems in my experience. Maybe try out Engenius as it seems that they do make some quality routers for industrial usage (tho cisco does as well but they simply have heat troubles). TrendNET, my friend did have good luck with em but I dont know, theyre rather new in the high end home router segment, they've always been the elcheapos.
If you dont need wireless N and happy with G and on a budget, do get the Linksys WRT54GL and load tomato firmware onto it.
I've personally ruled out brands like D-Link and LevelOne because they either dont get firmware updates/custom firmware or they simply have tedious firmwares. Not to mention TrendNET is like
If you do have more budget...
The one router I would have to praise tho is the Apple Airport Extreme, its expensive but seems to have the most robust factory firmware and reliability.

There is also a line of router boards that excels in high traffic called Microtik, you'll prob have to buy yourself a few parts and put it together lol.

So yeah the way it also works out is that if you tend to have alot of traffic and want to keep the same router for long, you buy a more expensive one
if you want to change routers every year or 2, get a mid priced one
If you want to lose hair within the first few months, get the cheapest one lol

did you perform all the necessary windows updates?

if not, i would do a manual selection of all updates and see if you find an update for your network adapter, or go to toshibas site and look up your lappy's specific drivers and see if there is a driver for the network adapter, if the date on the driver toshiba provides is recent, i would be willing to bet that you have older drivers and the new one could possibly fix this problem.

i would also advise you to update your routers firmware if you havent already.
