I got a nasty-gram from my ISP for downloading torrents. I need some software, preferably free, that can hide my IP address. Anyone got any recommendations? PM me if you don't want to post it here.

ISP will still detect your traffic as you're still going through them even if you mask your IP address. Depending on their warning, it could either be they recieved a complaint or you did too much traffic on the system. Canada usually has downloading in grey area thus its more likely the latter. You should probably simply limit your upload speed on the torrents to a bare minimum. If your ISP throttles your internet when it detects peer2peer traffic, you could encrypt the packets and try to trick its detection.
else find a off-location server and torrent there then download from there

I don't see what the issue is? There is nothing wrong with downloading files this way (provided that the data you are downloading is not copyrighted).

Do you have limits on how much upload/download bandwidth you can use on your account? If you do have limits and you exceeded them then you're probably SOL, but if you have an unlimited contract with them then they can't complain! Sounds like it's time to take your money somewhere else!

For masking my IP address I like using Opera browser as it allows me to input my own working IP(Proxy address) in the options menu. I then get an anonymous proxy from another country and use that. That way It's like a piggyback system. You-> Anonymous Proxy(ex. germany)-> Content. The website or whatever will detect the piggyback IP in this case germany and will think you are from there.

Unfortunately, that will only mask his IP address to the content provider - it won't solve the issue. Like kyoshiro said, hiding/masking his IP isn't going to help.

The nasty gram said my ip address was identified as being on a torrent site and had downloaded Shark Tales. It is the studios or whomever that I want to hide my ip address from. my isp won't care as long as they don't get the emails and have to pass them along to me. I don't do this often, but if I can't get it by other means, then the torrent is usually a good option. Walk me through step by step what I'd need to do to mask the IP from 3rd parties.

So it was a warning from them saying that you shouldn't be downloading movies from torrent Web sites? Or was it the studio who sent your internet providor a note, and they passed it on to you?

Hope you're not in any trouble mate!

i think there was an application called peer guardian which blocks all the suspected ips from connecting
what you're looking at anyhow is a VPN (virtual private network) which routes your traffic all through the VPN server. Could be costly but it'll be the VPN server's IP that will show up and the traffic between you and the VPN is encrypted. Reality is tho u can still get traced back if they really tried (like most other things)

Piet, it was the latter; the ISP just passed it along to me. I take this stuff seriously though and don't need any hastle. At this point it was like a cease and desist order.
