wow. we all pretty much knew these places did shady business . . . . but it's a eye opener to see it in this way when they are getting caught and trying to lie their way out of it.

first. never take my cars to do basic maintanance. when my clutch goes ill either get my friend who works for honda do it or will drive it down to VA to have our honda wiz do it with some other engine upgrades and maintance

funny thing mentioned budget. Microcenter has same thing that they need to make certain amount per work order, in their case they actually do it

third. good thing they didnt do trany flush on accord. there would be problems if they did, dont ask me why but its known issue with honda and trany flushes, it needs to be drained and refiled

Misha ... could you please share some info on the honda tech in VA that you mentioned on your last post. I have a family member that needs his honda serviced and we can't find a good mechanic.

My car is due for an oil change soon and I've been trying to find someone to do just the labor on the oil change ... so far everyone wants me to buy their cheap oil and filter or i can pay the full price for their oil change and I get not discount for bringing the supplies.

I might have to buy the ramps soon so I can do this at home.

 

well his name is Paul and he is more of high end builder so to say. he doesnt usualy do oil changes becouse our guys that he deals with do it themself. he does all our engine, force induction builds and so on, he is realy good at what he does. i think best is to do it yourself. its not hard to do if you have done it before. on 4 cyl models of honda its little hard to get to in some case. on v6 its right near pass front wheel. where in VA are you?

 

Gianni..I've been using Amsoil oil and filters for years and do the oil changes on my FX and my wife's Pacifica as well as my in-laws 2 vehicles. Listen man, if I can do it, you sure as Hell can! Get yourself a jack and 2 jack stands. There is lots of step by step DIY sites online where you can print out what you need to know. It's really very, very easy.
Jack up car
Place stands
Check for stability (place stands where manual recommends)
Undo oil filter and drain
Undo oil plug and drain
Install new filter
Reinstall oil plug
Fill with recommended amount
Start car, check for leaks and then shut off
Remove jack stands and lower
Bob's Your Uncle

Things you'll need:
Jack
2 stands
socket set
oil drain pan
cold beer
good cigar
OK..last 2 are optional
You can also get an oil filter wrench but it should not be put on too tight...you should be able to remove it just by hand.

 

It's not for an oil change ... it's for a timing belt change and a possible clutch replacement.

I was referring to my Olds Aurora when I mentioned the oil changed.

I'm in Fredericksburg, VA ... Northern Virginia.

 

Thanks for the words of encouragement, but I have done this before ... I live in a townhouse community that doesn't allow people to change their own oil or work on their vehicles (like changing the brakes and similar services). I have a really small garage that I can barely fit my car.

I already talked to a couple of neighbors about my detailing hobby and so far no one has complained about my excessive car washing sessions ... that might change after I use my makita and pc in a few weeks ... lol.

 

^^^you forgot to remove oil cap on top of engine. makes drainage faster i think (i always do it)

when i do it.
drain oil first and then take filter off.
put new filter on (dont forget to oil rubber ring on filter before putting it on, for some reason they do it)

i do use amsoil on my car for now but for some reason i was told that synthetic was not very good for my engine based on Pauls observations while taking engines apart which had synthetic oil since day 1.



usually you have to put oil filter on by hand and remove it with wrench, never tighten oil filter with a oil filter wrench, its hard to remove as it is when put on by hand

Misha..good point with the oil cap...I had forgotten that. I do it in my sleep now so it's hard to think it through. The last post will be more helpful than mine...I was just trying to show how easy it is for anyone who hasn't done it yet.

 

i stopped doing going to walmart to change oil after i found one time that oil filter was damaged by them. never they see me in there. it was couple years ago. i do all maintanace work myself. yes there is no official record of things thats been done but years inspection shows that everything is fine. plan to keep my car for long time so doesnt bother me

 

I used to change oil on my own, but not anymore...but I don't go random places either...I go to the same place, and know the mechanic (which is my cousin)...BMW is still getting services at the dealership (which is on maintaince program)...

 

I always try and go to the same shop to get mine done, I've known the guy/guys there for a while and trust them with my cars, I know where they live so they know not to f*#k with my car lol.

 

i go to the Mitsubishi dealership. Keep a little booklet of everything that is done. Plus, if they don't do something and it breaks, its under warranty lol, so their loss. But the guys there know how anal i am about my car, so they do everything right.

 

My Dodge only goes to a Dodge dealership that has two diesel mechanics on staff at all times. However, I was not aware of this Jiffy Lube scam and have been taking my wife's Explorer there for years.

Now I know why those guys are so quick and efficient.

An a related note, my friend brought in her Mustang GT for an oil change at Jiffy Lube. They drained the old oil, but never put new oil in. Needless to say, the engine didn't last long. Jiffy Lube paid the bill for a new engine.

this is some spooky stuff to see that people out there are just getting blind sided with bs from these places . . . . . and they don't even get slaps on the wrist for it. I have got to imagine there are a fair amount of people with lawsuits pending against these places.
