It was during the bridge's 50th Anniversary that more than 800,000 people were 'gridlocked' shoulder to shoulder on the bridge, where the majority of the populous were trying to get to the center of the bridge.
Several engineers then noticed that the bridge 'flattened' out its normal arch due to the weight being brought on by the party goers.

One on-looker mentioned, "At the center, the cables were as taut as strings on a harp, but on either end, the cables were as loose as spaghetti."
