So the other day I decided to order a few things directly from Chemical guys. I picked up a bunch of MF towels that I haven't tried before...because you can never have enough MF towels! This one in particular, the Microfiber Max 1/2" thick towel looked pretty cool. I always wash my MF towels before using, even the new ones. I inspect them and package them in ziplock baggies till I need them.... Well, just finished a car less than a week ago....polish...ez creme glaze...2 coats jetseal109...and a coat of SV Smaragd! All set till spring. Well I just washed today and decided to wipedown with FK425 using the new CG Microfiber max. All was fine till I got to the trunk lid and as I was wiping, I felt this grinding sensation! I stopped immediately, thinking I picked up some trash in the MF, which seemed impossible, since I am always careful where I sit it down. Unfortunately there was already light scratch in the paint that was a few inches long and will take some light polishing to correct :devil: So I inspect the towel and I don't see any trash! It is really thick, so I started squeezing it with my finger tips inch by inch feeling for something that could have scratched the surface. Then I came across this: It is one of those plastic things that holds a tag in place, like on a shirt. I had to clip one of the ends to get it off. It will not come off with washing! I had 4 of these towels and they all had one on it. It's very well hidden in the fat fluffy fibers, but its a nightmare waiting to happen. I didn't feel it when I inspected the towel after washing, but its just waiting to scratch your paint!!:shakehead: Seems like a nice towel, but I will probably stay away from it. Just wanted to give everyone a heads up if you use this towel!!!
I have been eyeing that towel for longest time now. Went to buy it and saw the 550's on sale 3 for 17.00. when I got them they also to had a tag not plastic that had been removed.Thanks for the heads up but I'm still going to give It a shot. Now I know.
Great post for everyone to read. Sorry about your paint though. I don't think you should deter people from buying these as they look like a nice towel, they just need to look for these before they start. Did you call CG and let them know?
Thanks for the responses. Don't really want to deter anyone, since it is a really nice MF. It's thickness and fluffyness do make it harder to examine. Just have to take some extra time with these. Just wasn't really expecting to find a plastic piece like that.
I always check my MFs complete before I use them, but I can see how the thick MFs would make this an issue. Another reason against the silly thick MFs. In any regard, thanks for the heads up. Have you contacted Paul yet? He will make sure the problem is fixed.
i thought everyone knew about this i said this before... it is satan's trap!!!! it has caused about 300 in damage on my 335..all i got out but it was a pain the first time i used them.. very disappointing in cg for not rectifying the problem.. i love those towels for dusting the interior.. but they do shed too much at first they need about 5 washes.. i have about 15 or so.. thickest towels i own.. not a fan to use them for removing lsp's and cleaner fluid b/c of the shedding.. and i told paul 8 months ago about the problem so obviously they aren't fixed yet.. probably still working off a large batch of thousands..plus not everyone has one in them which makes it more retarded.. great towel for under the seat but it needs a lil more nap and it needs to be fixed of these plastic pieces..
Wow, that is terrible..really sorry to hear about your problem...could have been all over your car before you realized it, so you did a good job noticing it when you did
:yikes: sorry to hear about your experience, I've learned to check, throughly, all my micro fibers for this exact same reason. Micro fibers can pick up things even in the washing machine, so I know take a few minutes to inspect my towels before I use them. I don't own any of these CG towels, most of my towels come from eShine and they aren't too thick. But I can see how the thickness of a towel would make the inspection much more difficult. thanks for this thread. i read it and then immediately got really worried for some reason. i drove over to my shop and grabbed all of my DD Ubers and most of them had little wood splinters on both sides of them! could have been bad....
I gather there was never a tag of any sort attached to it? Good catch. I bet CG didn't even realize. As others have said, difficult to spot through all that nap.
Nope, no tag was attached to it. I am guessing maybe there is a tag on it when CG receives it. Just a general follow up. These turned out to be a really nice MF towel. Once I got past the irritation of what happened, I throughly inspected them and they each only had that 1 single plastic tag holder. I ended up using them recently to wipe/buff after a QD spray and really like these MFs. They are very soft and fluffy. Just have to be really careful to inspect before using.
