So my buddy rang me up few days ago freaking out about this paint chip he got on his brand new STi. So he came by and ask me to take a look at it: Great. I've done a couple spot rock chip repair before, but nothing like this. It is at the most awkward spot ever. Right against the window trim. Aside from taping it right to the edge of the window trim. What else can anyone suggest to make this repair easier.
If your buddy is freaking out about that, you can expect many more calls in the near future with him freaking out. Sorry I don't have much more to offer than that, it looks like you have any ideas I could provide covered.
Clean it and tape it up. Then touch up paint with a toothpick. 2 problems with that though. One, Subys don't offer touch up paint in a bottle. Only in a rattle can. Two, subys have very thin paint.
LOL, you should see my wrx and it's growing collection of rock chips. It gets a good beating at rallyx Also, Subaru does offer touch up paint in a bottle. Just ask the dealership. I've gotten some before
I am planning to wet sand it to level it after. Any tips on polishing areas where it is very close to the window trim?
You can polish it by hand to keep from overdoing it with a machine. being how thin the paint is that would be how I would approach it.
I guess I will hand polish it first, and if that doesn't give any progress then I will use my DA with a 4" B&S Yellow with Menzerna Intensive Polish.
Tape the area for sure. Use a pointy toothpick and do a few light layers rather than one big blob. Do not wet sand so close to an edge. Use Langka or Dr Chip to level it.
Absolutely!! You're right on the edge by the looks of the pic. The paint is always thinnest there. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
If you can get a spray can, shoot some into a plastic container and brush it on or get it on the car with a tooth pick or Q-tip. Don't wet sand it, just build it up to the right level from the get-go. Being in such an inconspicuous area, simply getting it nearly level and the right color, it won't be noticeable.
I have had great success with Dr Colorchip.com product. If the user is less accurate about applying the paint to the chip, its ok because you are then going to smear it to help level the chip using another bottle of product, that will also add the shine to the chips so they look great. No need to buff, there will be no paint on the rest of the area because that 2nd bottle of product cleans it all off. Also agree with the rest above - this is right next to the edge and there is always less paint on edges.. You dont want to be using anything that can take the paint down off the edge, and its not going to work to try to tape just the edge and work outside of it, as this will create yet another edge when you pull off the tape.
