Looking for general advice for when and when not to wet sand. I am speaking in general of very light sanding, with something like 3m trizact 1500-3000 grit.

What are the scenarios for wet sanding? When should you avoid it?

    Thank you

Do not wetsand if the paint/clearcoat are too thin. I would say wetsand if you are trying to get rid of orange peel, paint runs, or areas that were not sanded properly before.

Obviously you will need to follow up with a 2-3 step compunding/polishing process, depending on what grit you finished down with.

depends on what you're trying to accomplish....scratch removal, orange peel removal or leveling, removing light paint runs, removing dirt that has dried in cured paint, removing etching (from bugs, treesap, acid rain/waterspots). all scenarios can be different. if you are a little more specific we can help you better. and like roger said, i wouldnt recommend wet sanding without a paint meter unless you are very experienced with wetsanding.

good thread guys. i need to post a couple pics up of my girlfriends car which has some form of etching on the hood, roof and trunk and i tried m105 with no luck. I'm guessing maybe wet sanding will eliminate it but I'm no expert on wet sanding.

sorry if i bum rushed the thread i just would rather not create a new thread with the same question.

Neutralize that acid before you wetsand/polish.

Thank you for the replies, I was speaking of mainly water etchings and damage similar to the picture posted above...
