I'm just looking through some backing plates for a rotary. So, what makes that 3M backing plate so special, that is is priced at $70 a piece??? What backing plates do you guys use? I'm ltalking about a rotary backing plate. ANybody uses Gloss It backing plates?
    Any info is greatly appreciated.

    TIA.

I use the Rubbish Boys ones. I got the 5" and 3" sizes (?) for less than the 3M one. I love 'em!

The velcro is pretty strong and the padding is nice. Aside from that, I don't know. I use the 3M and have had it for a while. I've seen other post that their other plates have come apart. That could be ugly if your working while it happens.

IMO youre paying for the name. its BS. i use the rubbish boys ones too, and they're perfect. also have the old school lake country ones, but they're only still around for backup now. i have a really small padded BP made by tufbuf or someone i think. its got like a 2 inch surface or 50mm i think.

If you're looking a good BP from Ben, check out the new one from Liquid Shine - it's impressed me in a short 30 mins that I've used it, and I'm not one to eulogise BP's!
In fact, I've preferred standard BP over the likes of the 3M style, even though I appreciate the advantage(s) they're supposed to provide.

I have all 3 of the custom RubbishBoy's BP's and love them . Great price and quality.Never used the 3M units and just can't bring myself to part that kind of cash for 1 Bp .

I haven't used 3M but I'm almost positive Ken has and we both use Gloss-it backing plates. They look identical and I love my gloss it ones. They work great especially around the curves and the velcro is strong on them. They're priced well imo, and if you order from Ken it'll be even cheaper because of the currency lol

I like my 3M a lot. I bought it second hand from JL. No effing way would I pay $70 for one though - they've gone up a heck of a lot since they first came onto the scene. I want to say they used to cost $40 or so?

I've got the small BP from Ben, and I do like it a lot. If my 3M ever craps out or starts to look like it might, I'll get one of Ben's, or one of the Gloss-It plates.

I ordered the GI BPs from PolishedBliss some days ago and I'll probably have them with me tomorrow. I can give some feedback on them if wanted..

    Kind regards,

Other then DD, it's near impossible to find a 3m 09553 backing plate.

It's hard to find things on the 3M website...

You are NOT kidding! It's impossible to find stuff on the 3M website. I can be sitting there with a part number written down, punch it into their search engine, and get either nothing at all, or unrelated items. Their website is hopeless.

Funny story about the 3M website. I was looking for something, might have been foam pads. I couldn't find them for about half an hour. Somewhere along the way, I got a popup to participate in a survey about the 3M website. "OK, I'm really gonna let 'em have it," I thought. So I got through the whole survey, being very honest, and trying to not be too over-the-top with my comments. Can you guess what happened when I went to submit the survey? It was bugged. I got some server-side exception gibberish, and couldn't get back into the survey at all.

    I've tried both Gloss-it and 3M.

Gloss-it doesn't feel as firm or thick as the 3M one. It does have stronger velcro though by far. the 3M one even with uber pads on could use a little help in that department. I don't think it was just mine because mine was 99% perfect. Still, the 3M one does look like a better quality product. The gloss it bp has all the adhesives on the top showing, and the part attaching to the rotary itself doesn't really feel the same. Yes, I am being picky about this.

The main reason I switched to the gloss it ones was to buy the 3" one at the same time. That one looks pretty much identical to the rubbish boys ones. This one is basically the same as the 5" one but smaller. That may be a bit obvious, but I mean this in every way.

I'm still waiting for next week to do a full review of the Gloss-it backing plate. I only used it on a front bumper and the front half of a hood on a BMW 3-series sedan. The 3M backing plate with a soft pad was pretty easily controlled over curves or bends on a car though. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the price on that. I would say just get the cheapest one you can find. 3M seems to be the most readily available since Phil has it.

If the USPS ever gets me my 3M one from Luis, I'll post a comparison for everyone. I've got the GI ones right now and love them. I wish the velcro was a bit stronger but other than than, coupled with the GI pads, they make for a wonderful polishing experience.

If Meguiar's would come out with a version of their So1o BP that doesn't require the use of their companion So1o pads, I'd be all over it. As it stands, the So1o BP is a little too large for use with 5.5" pads.

Great find! That page has the UK pads on it too. Wonder if the "free shipping" applies to products shipped to the US...

EDIT: Well, that's lame. I put some stuff in my cart and went to check out. They only ship to the UK and Ireland.

Dear 3M, why do you make it impossible for people in your largest market to buy your best detailing products?
