Review: Anti-Frost Washer Fluid

I bought a bottle of Anti-Frost Washer fluid (AF) at the beginning of last winter and was so impressed I purchased a couple more to have on hand.

Fast forward to this season; after driving my parents cars a few times and needing to clean off the soiled windshield I was extremely unhappy with the existing fluid which is one of the common brands that is sold everywhere. I decided my parents deserve, no…need the same level of clarity and safety that I get using AF, so I gifted those two bottles to them.

So, how does AF compare to the generic brand?

With the generic brands retailing at about $2 per gallon versus Phil’s 1L bottles costing $9.00 the cost of entry is a bit steeper, and will likely deter many people from purchasing. However, AF can be diluted quite a bit; 1 part AF to 2 parts H20 is good to 7* (-14C for our friends North of the border); plenty good for most snowy climates. However, living in the Land of 10,000 frozen Lakes I decided to use about 2 parts AF to 1 part water; this ratio should be good well below -22f (-22C).

I believe the generic brands are meant to be used in pure form.

AF requires far less solution to be sprayed than the generic brands. A couple small spurts is usually enough to clear off my windshield of the usual sand, slush, and brine mix that splatters onto the windshield. But sometimes the salt/brine requires a bit more cleaning to remove any remaining salt streaks.

These two reasons should help offset the price gap between the generic and AF fluid.

One of the best things about AF is the streak-free optics. This is something that the generic stuff just can’t offer.

Can't speak of the Anti-Frost but if its anything like Krastal Klar it's awesome! I found that the dilution ratio that they recomend is still strong so I'm playing with ratio's still to dial it in. This stuff will clear anything off the windshield and it doesn't take much at all. Streak free! I'm sure there are some of these properties in AF plus the ability to resist freezing.

Does anyone use Distilled water in the washer fluid? I use P21S at the dilution ratio recommended and even tried less and it seems to leave streaking on my pillars and window(where the wipers don't reach).

I believe it and Krastal Klar are meant to be used with tap water.

Kristal Klar is used with tap water. Correct.

i had the opportunity to try some kristal klar in a sample and it was freaking amazing!

washer fluid gone wild...! as in good. :headbang:

from that experience, I didn't even need to read a review on the anti-frost product. i got some based on the sole experience with kristal klar.

my mentality was that if they can make an awesome summer wash fluid, then the winter product has to be just as good. boy was i ever right.

and yes, like chaseme said, anti-frost is diluted. there is no need to use it "pure" and even if you dilute it to 1:1, you get 2L from 1 bottle.

i diluted mine 1:2 which gave me 3L. close enough to a gallon...lol...3/4 less actually (0.78L) but still damn good.

Should I buy this or Kristal Klar?

lol...how often does it snow per decade in austin, texas?...haha

i know it might get cold but you'll be good with kristal klar...

if ur afraid of the kristal klar freezing on cold nights then you can get anti frost and dilute it to the max...it'll be good enough for the climate there.

Thanks for taking the time to write this review :) Getting feedback from our customers helps us a lot. It snowed last year in Austin and gets below freezing with the wind chill factor. Yes, we do get the arctic front during the winter. But wow do we have a mild and wet winter out here this year! With that said, Kristall Klar is sufficient most days out of the year. Fyi: If you do have Anti-Frost in your washer tank and you're going into the warmer months, you can use the product year round so you don't have to go through all of it just to change to Kristall Klar. And both products mix well with one another.

Thanks Michael. Sounds like Kristall Klar is the one then. I'd used it in the past when Phil send me a sample and I was extremelly impressed with it.

How did you like that storm last night? Pretty intense...

P1et, Kristall Klar will work the best. I always mix with distilled water and you'll get better results! You will get allot of gallons out of the bottle so the cost isn't that much more than the cheap crap! We got 6" last night with tons of lightning and it's still pouring!

The storm ... the thunder, unbelievable. On the news saw a warehouse in east Austin blown apart.

I have had the generic stuff freeze in the lines on my vehicle.
Last time it happened I switched to Anti-Frost, and have never had that problem again.
    Love how it smells too.

I reviewed the footage on my security cameras and saw that at one point my entire street look like a small river and my backyard was flooded. AMAZING!

Michael, not to steal the thread but what is the proper mixing ratio for Kristall Klar?? If I follow the direction I seem to get to many bubbles and foam?

Being in Dallas we don't get much winter but when we do it seems to always be ice. I may get this to put in my car for next month. If nothing else it will help with frost.

Good question. It's 1:100 - an amount equal to the bottle reservoir filled and mixed with 1 gallon of water. Use with tap water. Bottled water of soft water (if you have a soft water system are going to make the solution very soapy. If you need to, reduce the amount of KK - start with half the reservoir mixed with 1 gallon of water and see the results. If not cleaning well enough, add a little KK into the washer tank directly. If you already have the solution in your washer tank, I would add some water to it and see the results. Let me know how that works out.
