Hey guys longtime no post! We got my grandfathers 2012 f350 that had been smoked in. Aside from a thorough cleaning/filter replacement what is the best and safest way to permanently remove the smoke smell? I thought ozone was the way togo but it sounds like it degrades the plastics which I dont want todo obviously. I see car vaccine but also see conflicting reviews on that as well and am not sure about the chlorine gas. For my jeep I used the sonex interior system but it hadnt worked the way I had hoped. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
It really depends on how bad it was smoked in ... The first thing you need to do is scrub every possible hard surface. You will see it bleed "tar" immediately. You will have to extract all the interior (specially the driver's b-pillar area). The headliner will have to be carefully wiped down to avoid glue damage. Damp microfiber with an interior cleaner (ultima interior gel or similar one) will do the trick, but you need to be gentle and take your time. After getting all the interior done, let it dry for a few hours (turn on the heater will help). I would let it sit overnight on a warm summer day. I would proceed to do the ozone treatment for about an hour or two with the A/C system on REC (change the cabin filter first). Ozone is safe as long as all surfaces are dry to the touch. I wouldn't run it for hours. After the ozone treatment, do one or two 1z klima treatments. I don't guarantee that it will completely remove the smoke smell, but it will improve it a lot. Depending on the severity, it might completely remove it.
