I've used Dr. ColorChip on my front bumper and have been very pleased with the results, but I now need to fix a few chips on the hood and have a few questions. HISTORY: I just hit the entire hood with a 3-4 stage polish (Meg's 105 for a heavy scratch, followed by Menzerna PO83Q, P106FA and PO87MC), followed with DWG (glaze), Jetseal 109 (sealant) and Pete's 53 (wax). I am a bit OCD. PROCESS?: I need to fix a couple of stone chips on the hood (long story, but I live in a condo and have to hit a 24 hr coin-op in the middle of the night to run my PC off my inverter to perform my corrections). So I am thinking I will tape off the area (~ 12 x 12) that need the chip repair, hit said area with IPA to remove the glaze/sealant/wax then apply the Dr. ColorChip fix. My question is: Is is possible to to just reapply the taped off area with my glaze/sealant/wax once the Dr. ColorChip cures or should I plan on cleaning the entire hood and then hitting the entire panel with my post polish regiment? Any advice on blending would be appreciated. Thanks!
Not Familiar with some of the products you mentioned, but I'm familiar with chip repair. I use Colormatch Paint. Clean the chips real good with IPA wipe. Then I glob the paint into chip. Let sit for 24 hrs, come back with 2000-2500 grit sand paper and sand till area is even.(go slow, you can always remove more, but its hard to add to "Burn Thru") then hit it with megs 105 followed by Ultra-Fine. I use an Eraser for my sanding block, you know the kind that are flat and rectangle in shape. Wrap paper around eraser tight and put a flat thumb tack on back side. Keep the area wet...Hence wetsanding I hope this help you, if not someone else will be along shortly
Yes you can. Just make the chips are free of any sealant, wax or glaze before painting otherwise they may fail. You may need multiple IPA application You can also fashion yourself with a small tool so you can wetsand the chips(both before especially if its down to the metal and rusting and after). I used to use a pencil with rubber cemented wetsand paper on it and use a twisting as a wetsanding motion. Be sure to put up any edges that are raised on the chip(again if to the metal). Also consider priming if its at the metal Just be aware that youre going to get overlap and in the case of any products with cleaners may lift your previous protection. Blending is tough especially with some dealerpens. THIN APPLICATIONS. When I did mine I also lived where I didnt have power or a garage near the car. I cleaned, sanded and primed. Made a little hut of painters tape over the chip letting air in but covering it from anything falling into it. Came back an hour later first coat of color then remake the hut of tape so nothing gets stuck in the wetpaint. And hour or so later another coat of color etc etc. Finished with multiple coats of clear and adequate drying. Then I let it dry allll with the hut of tape for an hour, took the tape off and let it finish drying in the sun and outgassing(what little there was but still). I let my chip dry for a week. Then did the leveling and polishing back. Dont forget to finish the filling of the chip with the clearcoat. And do a coat so the clear JUST breaks the flat surface of the paint. For whatever its worth my color match from the dealer was CRAP. It was awful. So I would test on a separate piece of something just to make sure its close enough for you when it dries.
I do a lot of chip repairs. Whenever I have a car to do, I always ask the customer to bring touch up paint. Cleaning the area as mentioned above is obviously very nb. My preference is now actually a spray bomb made up of the factory paint but a small bottle will suffice as well; these are available at paint supply houses. The KEY to filling in chips is small amounts, multiple applications with adequate dry time. I'll share a tip with you for the best paintbrush there is...a POINTY toothpick. Dip it into a small blob of paint (I usually put some on a piece of cardboard) and place it in the middle of the chip. Let it WICK into the chip. Let dry for a day or so and repeat. If you want to get fancy, bring it up past the level of the surrounding paint and level it either chemically with Langka or by wet sanding and Bob's Your Uncle.
Thanks for the tips everyone. I'll give it a shot and try to post some before and after pix once I have some time to do it right. Much appreciated :thumb:.
No, what's your issue? I don't see any advise from you...what's yours? What's your problem with mine?
R U Serious^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^6 Well I DID respond, its the Method I've used for 30 years, works 4 Me. :hmph: I was actually just pulling your chain. The products/methods I had hi-lited in my 1st response to you are Greek to Me :giggle: The Bob's your Uncle really got Me :lol2: :sorry: if I offended you, was only tryin to make a Joke..... I know, I need to keep My Day job...lol
Flash..I accept your apology. I was offended. That does not normally happen. I've been on here almost 2 years and have had fun with a lot of people. I, too, like to joke a lot and have a warped, twisted sense of humour from my profession. The spray bomb was explained in my S & S post of the CTS Caddy which had been keyed. It is the best source of touch up paint I have found. Try it if you don't believe me; it spreads much easier. The toothpick is another thing you should try instead of ridiculing. Just a suggestion, but maybe you need to tone down the quantity of jokes. You had made a comment about even your wife saying something about that, if I recall. I'm a hard guy to piss off. Maybe today is not a great day for me or something. I will try to take your posts with a few grains of salt from now on. I DO see where you had posted a valid, helpful post to help this man with his question. I too have over 30 years detailing cars and have tried a lot of things, some have worked, some have not. For a cantankerous old fart, I'm pretty willing to try new products and methods. As far as "Bob's your uncle"...maybe that's a Canadian saying you Americans are not familiar with...I don't know..it means you're all set. I expect this to die here. I hold no grudges, let's move on.
Wow, :sorry: Very Sorry I offende you. Bye all means this will end here :thumb: I'm a lo-tech guy in a hi-tech world. Most all the stuff I know I learned from a man thats 75 years old.He put out Show Quality Paint Jobs for 50 years. He taught Me how to do Swirl Free Polishing 25 years ago, using nothing but Wool. :buffing: Spray Bomb...Sounds Cool. Might have to try it sometime :headbang: As far as My Wife not liking My sense of Humor...Awe Fooey :giggle: When I 1st met her She said if We were Married She would put Arscenic in My Coffee...:yikes: I responded, Lady don't worry, if I Marry you I'll Put Arsenic in my on Coffee...:giggle: This Reminds Me of a Story :shead: My Daughter and I were looking at Photos 1 day when She was Young. When She saw a picture of Mommy when she was younger She Said:" Is this what Mommy looked like when she came to work for US...LOL" I replied, Yes Darling :duh: I will try to tone down My Humor, but haven't ever been to yet. So wish me luck :tiptoe: As far as taking Me with a grain of Salt....:shead: All This business has done for Me is Put 2 Girls thru College, Pay My Mortgage in Full and have No Car Notes ......So what could I possibly Contribute :hmph: Hope you Have a Good Day :chips:
