Quick question....does anyone know if the TPMS on the inside of the wheel can be removed from the valve stem? Here's what happened....While trying to remove a stuck valve cap from the stem on my truck(metal one, not plastic) I ended up snapping off the valve stem from the wheel. I looked up new sensors...and they are $54.00 apiece, however some website offer a valve stem separately for $5.00. Is this stem to place into the TPMS unit? Bottom line...can I remove the tire, remove the stem/TPMS unit, change the broken stem in the TPMS unit, replace the new stem/old TPMS unit in to the wheel, remount the tire, and balance the wheel? Or.... Am I screwed and have to get a new TPMS sensor? Is anyone familiar with this issue?
it is to my understanding that in most cases after you remove the wheel/tire you can unscrew the valve stem from the sensor and still have a good tpms remain. So you should be able to replace the stem.
hey, check any local tire installation place and see if they can help you out. I trust my tire installation to NTB. been using them for 5 years now.
You can replace just the stem but in proper shops the stem should be torqued to a certain spec, its because the stem is actually the antenna for the tpms sensor.
Ok GM vehicles have a two kinds of TPMS sensors. One type is the complete all metal/aluminum type TPMS. These types of sensors are one complete unit and you need to replace the whole thing. If you have a rubber stem type TPMS sensor and you pulled on the stem to hard and snapped then go to a tire store and just buy the new stem. When you take the tire off in the back of the sensor you will remove a tiny torx screw from the valve stem. Now just screw the sensor back on and you are good to go. Gm part number for a complete rubber type sensor is: ACD#15922396 GM# is the same as above. good luck with TPMS.
Hey everybody.....Thanks for all the help. I ended up solving the problem by just installing regular valve stems for now. The tire pressure sensor modules are more than I want to spend right now. However, I saved the old transmitter from the tires. It has all the information I need, so I will order the correct sensor. For the record, it appears that these sensors cannot have the valve stem removed from the sensor housing. It is a pressed fit/and sealed unit. I will post pictures later. Again, Thank you to everyone gave me a direction to look in while, (at the same time) trying to solve a problem at 03:00 in the morning! Cheers.
Hey Mr. Shine MRSHINE here. My wife has an equinox and when i went to clean her rims i hit it with the sponge and broke the stem off. boy did that suck, the air came rushing out and i had to put the spare on to get it to a garage.I had to do the samething and put a rubber stem in until i could get it to the dealers. The garage wanted to charge me 100.00 bucks for the sensor.I went to the dealer and told them it broke while putting air in and they replaced it for no cost. Good luck
They rust all the time, I replace so many in the dealer. its a good thing that 2010 audi models don't use TPMS inside the wheels anymore. we use ABS module to monitor tire PSI.
