Has anyone here built one of these? I've been considering one lately as I find myself to be using my MacBook as more of a desktop and I could use something with more power. If you have built one, what would you say to one who is considering it? I'm fairly knowledgeable when it comes to computers and hardware, so I'm confident in building one myself. Thanks! :applause2: Kaval
I built one when I first saw some of the Hackint0sh posts (mostly because I could). Did not work on the first carcass I had sitting around but worked on the second. I read on insanelymac.com that there are issues with some motherboards and I am sure that was the most likely culprit in my setup. There are also some USB and SATA issues especially SATA RAID so some research is certainly in order. If you pick your hardware carefully you should be good to go. I guess the only caveat is upgrades, they can break your install or may not work at all. But hey with the money saved on hardware and since it is a hacking project if something goes kaflooey you just start again. FWIW you can build a Hackint0sh on VMWare, but the one I did was slow, slow, slow.
Thanks for the response scot_w. The thing that kind of turns me off is the fact that you can't really treat it like a normal computer when it comes to upgrades. On that same note, it's like building anything. Do it the first time, so you don't have to do it again. The main upgrades I'd be making would be video card, RAM and hard drives. By the time I do all of that, I'd probably be ready for another machine. I guess I'll keep reading on this subject and hopefully come to a conclusion. I love Macs, and would love a more powerful machine, but the price really turns me off.
what about one of these: Open with Mac OS X - Psystar or wait for macworld and see if they juice up the mac mini...
