Hey guys i copied this from another website and i was just wondering what you all thought about this process, i havent heard many good things about "clay replacement" and i have never really "protected" the winshield or other glass. Let me know what you guys think..... Step One – Remove Bonded Contamination Many professional detailers will start their glass cleaning process using a detailing clay to remove bonded contamination, which is dirt and grime that is stuck to your glass that won’t budge with regular washing or glass cleaning. Although detail clay works well, it tends to get trapped in the pits of older windshields. Once the clay is trapped, it is difficult or impossible to remove and interferes with the clarity. With the newer technology of the Ultima Elastofoam Paint Cleaning System, which works great on glass and paint, this is no longer a worry, as the Ultima Elastrofoam Block has a rubberized surface instead of the traditional clay bar. Step Two – Polish Away Dirt and Grime Now that the bonded contamination is gone it is time to get to polishing off that stubborn film of road grime. Autoglym Glass Polish is a mechanical and chemical cleaner so you will need to use a little elbow grease or pull out your dual action polisher and work by machine. Step Three – Final Cleaning The combination of a quality microfiber towel and an ammonia free glass cleaner is your final step to streak free windshields and glass. The Meguiar’s Glass Cleaner Concentrate is safe to use inside and out, even on tinted windows and offers consistent results. The concentration level of 10:1 is also very economical, as one gallon of concentrate will make eleven gallons of glass cleaner! Dilute the Meguiar’s Glass Cleaner Concentrate 10:1, do not use concentrate without diluting with water. Also, don't forget your Meguiar’s Glass Cleaner Bottle with dilution measurements and your and sprayer when you order your glass cleaner. Mist the Meguiar’s Glass Cleaner onto windshield or glass. Using the Sonus Der Wunder Microfiber Polishing Towel wipe area clean, in a horizontal back and forth motion. Going in a horizontal motion on the outside and an up and down motion on the inside will help you determine if any final streaks are on the inside or outside of your glass. As you are cleaning, turn and fold your microfiber towel often to expose a clean dry side is being used. Repeat the process over the entire windshield and glass windows. If your Sonus Der Wunder Microfiber Polishing Towel becomes too dirty or damp, replace with a fresh clean towel. A damp microfiber will cause streaks! Interior Glass Cleaning Cleaning your interior glass is the easy part. A quality microfiber towel and glass cleaner will usually do the trick. If your interior windshield or windows are extremely dirty you may use the Autoglym Glass Polish process but ONLY on non-tinted glass. Step Four - Protection The same Ultima Paint Guard Plus that works great on paint, also adds wonderful benefits to glass. This step is optional but it will help protect your work so your glass will stay clean and slick. When your glass is slick the environmental contaminants don't stick as well so your glass stays clean longer, water sheets off and your wipers glide easier providing greater visibility in the rain.
Hmmm... I have clayed windows but I also during the final correction pass I run the compound over the windows if there are still some water spots to clean them up, wipe the window down with glass cleaner, then usually coat with Power Lock (if doing that to the car)... Like rain-X on steroids and last OK with wiper use...
So you basically do those steps, might have to be something i add to my procedures. I guess it makes sense i never really thought of protecting the glass, but it makes sense i do, do taillights and headlights. Does the Compound work for you or would you think a "Glass" Polish would work a little better? Thanks,
Compounding works for taking off standard water spots. I have used Menzerna 203 on a green pad (on my Xterra) and it worked good. I don't know that I was polishing the glass enough to remove scratches but certainly enough to take the water spots off. I imagine a glass polish relies on a different set of compounds to cut into the glass.
Most water spots and light / medium scratches can be removed from glass by using a polish or compound The compounds used in glass polishing 'systems' for deep scratches is Cerium oxide [: Cerium (IV) oxide, ceric oxide, ceria, or sometimes simply cerium oxide CeO2 or cerium dioxide, is a pale yellow-white powder. It is used in ceramics, to polish glass, and to sensitize photosensitive glass. It is also used in lapidary as jeweller’s rouge; it is also known as optician's rouge] Use caution with polishes that contain aggressive abrasives like aluminium silica, aluminium oxide or cerium oxide (belonging to the group of elements known as rare earth) all necessary safety precautions should be used with regard to the dust produced. They also have the potential to damage glass by removing layers; compromising its strength and rigidity, necessitating replacement An airbag relies on the glass windshield as it ‘backing plate’ (i.e. it supports the inflated bag and gives it the necessary rigidity, as it is unable to arrest forward motion without some kind of strong support) so don’t do anything that would compromise it. Warning- these systems remove glass, maintain a wet surface and keep pad moving to avoid heat build-up and optical distortion
I have used clay on windshields - some very old and have not come across the issue of clay getting caught in the pits of the windshield. You'd have to be pressing pretty hard to get it to fill any pits. I normally clean, wash with P21S total auto wash and follow with a layer of RainX (or similar) and have great results over the years.
