This is just for fun... i know that all of us care much more about our cars than most people, both looks and performance wise. So...i was bored and wanted to know what everyone's favorite gas is (chevron, shell, BP...etc). this thread was inspired by me stumbling across a really old post by agpatel on the mkvforums website about shell gas. I have exclusively filled my car up with chevron since i bought it (since august), because i have a station right at the bottom of the hill that i live on and its always very clean. Not to mention, chevron gas has never given me problems. feel free to share!
Neat idea for a thread. I like Shell, there are a few near me and have always had good experiences, they are clean, and have good quality fuel.
I use almost exclusively mobil... they're the most convenient for me. The one I steer clear of is Shell... maybe coincidence, but the only times I've put shell in my rides with higher compression engines I've gotten ton of knocking and pinging. 2003 Silverado SS w/ the LQ9 6.0, the 2006 Trailblazer SS with the LS2, and even my dads 2009 C6 Z51 with the LS3... any of these things gets Shell gas from one of the local stations it runs like someone dumped popcorn kernels into the intake.
For a long time it was Sunoco, until I moved into Philly. Now it's Hess. Not the cleanest stations, but decent gas at competetive prices.
haha, man that is a old post of mine over on golfmkv LOL. Shell and BP for me still. Talked Terry back then and still keep in touch with him every now and then as I use his formulation for oil in the GTI so keep him updated on oil analysis findings and what not. He is one of the top experts in tribology and trust his opinions. Shell is suppose to be the best for direct injection motors.
My parents feed only Top Tier fuels into our BMW's. Since we live in NJ, Shell is the easiest to get and is a Top Tier gas. I'd like to try Chevron one day as they add Techron in their gas, but there aren't any where we live.
I don't have the link, but this was disgussed on the s2000 forums. And it was said that every 5000 miles you should switch gas. Since they all have cleaning agents in their formulas, what you are doing is basically cleaning your valves etc. Or something along the lines of that. It was written by a guy with a corvette  Personally? I've always had good luck with Chevron, that's what I use.
Except on DI engines where the valves see no gas at all, which causes whole bunch of other issues that are known but not fixed it. Well some have by putting a small injector pre valve to help keep it somewhat clean.:thud:
All gasoline brands have to have a minimum amount of detergents ... and the expensive ones usually have a "slightly" higher detergent concentration. From my experience, it depends from vehicle to vehicle. I have had several Hondas and they were really picky with gas ... they all ran rough with BP fuel. My 04 GTO was extremely sensitive to gasoline and only liked Shell. My 1998 Aurora runs any premium fuel without any issues. Back in PA was exclusively Wawa ... now here in VA is 7Eleven & Wawa. I usually run Lucas Fuel Treatment once a month to keep it clean and I sea-foam the engine and perform a minor tuneup every Spring.
it varies . . . . . 95% of the time i run Chevron gas unless i'm in a pinch and need a little bit to get by then 76 since it's near me. Never liked Shell. Found that my lifted truck actually got worse MPG's using Shell vs Chevron
I try to use shell. If I can find some without the methanol I'll get it. Thats kinda hard to find around here.
Hmm, its a funny topic since personally I haven't had problems with any fuel! But since I grew up with my father always putting min. 91 octane in any car, I do the same. My dad swears by Sunoco 94 tho... He said his old Civic ran nice with it. But personally I use well known companies- Shell, Sunoco, Esso, I don't use Petro Canada and those old looking stations. Also, as oil- Amsoil FTMW!! Hands down the best oil, the wholesale membership was like $20 but we (me & dad) buy oil for everyone so its great savings BTW here in Canada we dont have chevron, BP, Mobil so there is limited choices in gas. And 94 octane being the highest at the pumps.
Chevron and 76 here...everytime I tried Shell my fuel consumption was going up...2 cars run on premium, and 1 on regular...
yeah, i had a similar experience with shell gas in my old car. I got 206 miles per tank on chevron average, driving the same route every day going to and from school. Then i filled up with shell and was only able to get 186 out of that tank. I attributed it to the fact that ethanol was blended into the gas, as when i had finished filling up, i saw the dreaded ethanol sticker on the pump :shakehead:
ain't that the truth. I do definitely notice a difference. yeah that's the same experience i had. Different cars seem to run better with different brand fuel. As funny as that might sound from my experience that is what i was able to figure out.
Ah yes, an issue close to my heart. I only put top-tier stuff in the S2000. I used to use Mobil all the time, as they were one of the few stations that wasn't mixing ethanol into their fuel. When they started adding ethanol, I stopped going. There's an Exxon way out in north Durham with a big "NO ETHANOL HERE" banner, and they do stay busy as a result, but it's really, really far away. Anyway, with the S2000, it doesn't seem to make much difference; even the ethanol stuff doesn't seem to perform any differently. I've never tried any really off brand gas in it, so I wouldn't know how it responds to that. I occasionally run it on Costco gas with no issues. Heck, I used to run my race car on Costco gas. But mostly, it's BP, Shell, Exxon, or 76. As an experiment about a year ago, while the tank was low, I put a few gallons of 100 octane race gas in it. It ran like crap. It was WAY down on power. I immediately topped up the tank with 93. Much better. For the F250 diesel, I just go wherever there's cheap diesel that does a lot of business, so the fuel isn't super old when I get it. Mostly I go to Sheetz now. They sell a lot of diesel, the stores are clean, and for a few bucks, they actually do a pretty decent sandwich. Maybe three or four times a year, I fill it up with B20 biodiesel. Biodiesel is a great fuel system cleaner.
