    Richard,

My idea for posting this thread came from something I read that you were working on AND this thread...We could use a good led stand and bulb solutions. I'm tired of wearing my silly head lamp.

Could you please elaborate on the LED stand that you mentioned you were working on? It is buried, but I noticed that you might be working on a standing led correction light in this thread:

Richard was nice enough to pm me and let us know he has been swamped, but will catch up with this thread soon.

    Rob,
I've spent thousands of dollars on LED technology. People closest to me know that I'm always buying or looking for new lighting technology every where I go. This includes repurposing lights from different industries. This allowed me to determine what kind of lights worked best and what kind of technology was available, everything from dimmable to focusable LED's, to brilliant square LEDs. Right now I'm working with a lighting company and testing out a very unique light that not only lets me see holograms and swirls, but I can position it in any position I like. With my lighting background, I used a light stand and C-stand to hold it securely in place. But most recently I've adapted it to fit to a small portable camera tripod. This makes the system completely portable. I have a few clients I service in different states and flying to them has always been without my favorite lighting rigs, and instead relying on portable lights. This one doesn't rely on failure prone batteries, power is always 100%, and it doesn't mess up my hair like my LED headlamps, lol. I'll post more pix and details soon. Right now, I'm just trying to do proof of concept trials..not so much trying to make a product that I can sell right now.

Im waiting for dimmable LEDs for my 20 or so pot lights in my house LOL

Oh. I thought you were going to come to market with a light. Crappers.

I find that on certain paints, led's are the only thing that illuminates holograms and very, very light marring.

One thing is for sure. If it looks good under an led source, it will look good under any light!

i think dimming LEDs is a hard thing to do simply because theyre diodes with a set current and possibly impossible to do even with the current implementation. You send in more voltage, they blow, you send in too little, they dont work. I say you just throw in like 9 LEDs and make the dims, 1 -> 4 -> 9 on kinda thing :D

I have plenty of dimming LED's. How do they work? I'm not certain, but one of my lights has a slide switch to dim and another lever to focus the lens, and another light has a button that dims the lights in 4 levels with each button press.

I didn't say I wasn't coming to market...just that in my years of product development...a lot of testing and refinement is necessary and right now, while I think I have created the perfect combination...I'm not sure yet..so that's why it's not ready yet. So proof of concept stage is what I'm calling it...maybe late beta testing is a better term. =)

mmmm I guess Im up to the times with LED technology lol
having said that, I should look it up and see how they work =p

Now that is what I am talking about... I laughed when you said you didn't want to mess your hair up!

I have spent $1000's on lights, and would be willing to pay for a reliable free-standing solution.

For now I have this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0..._m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0TARM5AV70CPN6FH9WGC, and although it works great, it is simply impractical.

This was certainly true a few years ago, but things have changed with LED technology. You should see some of the stage lighting they have with LED's now... I mean $1,000+ a light..very powerful and bright and fully controllable. I was about to order, though I haven't yet, a $400 commercial LED lamp that looks amazing, lol. My lighting rep swears this is what I need instead of my 650 or 1000 watt tungsten lamps.

I have a version of that same light that's dimmable. I pulled the strap off and fixed it to some freestanding mounts. When I get to my shop, I'll post some of my development pix. That's a nice bright light you have.

i have 1200 lumen cree bulb, but it is too heavy for a traditional work light reflector.

LOL @ polishing in the otherwise darkness. The wild things we do!

I have some surefire lights that have different intensities, I know that LED probably cant fade like incandessent. I know some of the new CFL do.... but I like the clean look of white LED light

Oh that's the best way! Polishing in the dark lets me isolate the defects and not be distracted by other properties. It's the best way to see defects on white or silver paint as well. Course there are times when a lot of light is desirable too! But for the most part, polishing in the dark is also very relaxing, lol. But the flying insects sometimes bug me too much.

Shutting out the lights is one of the only ways I can isolate defects on my black mica (metallic) paint.

The metallic flake actaully reflects too much light for me to use halogens on. I can't see micromarring in bright light due to the reflection.

aha so i have discovered that dimming LEDs nowadays are done by ICs that alternate the current as opposed to voltage (which we do in bulbs)
    Highly Efficient 0-100% LED Dimmer
time to build your own circuitry! and it seems fading is possible as long as your IC can do enough range.

You are a technical wiz! I just know that if I slide my headlight's little adjuster back and forth the light gets brighter and dimmer! ... oh and it gets dimmer when the batteries are dying too! lol
