Boar's hair wheel brush - worth a try?

Boar's hair wheel brush, is it worth it? It's kinda pricey, so I wonder how well it performs, and how long does it lasts...Does it works well with Megs Wheel Brightener? Majestic Solutions SGS???

I feel it's only really good for well-maintained wheels that are sensitive to brushes (are easy to scratch). Other than that, I do quite fine with the SV and EZ brush combo just fine. I use the Laitner Power Brush sometimes as well.

 

I agree also with Denzil's assessment.

 

I personally really like it. I find using just a swissvax brush to clean the face of a spokey wheel can get fairly tiring.

You have to work a small brush into every spoke and crevice, with the boars hair brush I simply do a very quick general scrub of the entire face of a wheel and then go back with the swissvax brush to clean out the little crevices and areas I missed. I find its more efficient that way.

My stack of brushes used on almost every detail is as follows:

- Swissvax brush (for cleaning the crevices and all tight areas)

- DD spoke brush (for doing my initial scrub of the wheel inners, because its more firm than the EZ brush I find I can scrub up the tougher stuff with it first)

- EZ detail brush (used to clean in between and behind spokes and brake calipers)

- Boars hair brush (used before the SV brush to scrub out all surface grime from the wheels quickly)

I love the brush, its very good and love to use if on the face of the wheels!

 

This is a product that I have been on the fence about for a while now. I can't tell you how many times I've put one in my shopping cart when buying from a vendor, however I always remove it. It seems like a great tool but it is so pricey and I'm afraid like Denzil said that it might only work well for well maintained wheels. I also wonder how it would hold up to Megs Wheel Brightner and I tend to have to use that a lot to clean the nasty wheels I get.

dsms brings up a good point about the SV brush that it can be very tiring on the hands although it does a great job. My alternative and it seems to work extremely well for me is the green foam finger pockets. They clean really well and cause no fatigue plus they are cheap. I really like the boars hair brush but, until my client list consist of just high end exotics that I'll just stick to other alternatives.

 

+1 on the brush. Its works really well, takes the majority of the grime off the wheels face and spokes if they're not too thin. Then follow up with the SV brush for all the nooks and crannies. This brush cut wheel cleaning time in half. The bristles don't fall out either but I would rinse it after every use.

I use a soft bumper brush with flagged bristles. I ran the bristles across the back of a blank CD and it did not result in any marring. I find this brush useful for wheel faces, mesh grilles, and door jambs.

 

I agree, I just use the EZ Brush and the Swissvax brush, but the Swissvax brush on really complex rims can get tiresome, you know hand cramps up..ect..ect..but other then that I still use them, just me though.

I don't think I've used a Boar's hair wheel brush, so I honestly wouldn't know how to compare them to the Swissvax wheel brush.

 

I bought it originally for wheels but after using it I felt like the brush flattened way too much to be effective. I now use it for the wheel wells and continue to use the EZ Brush and SV brush for my rims.

 

I have one and use it sometimes but I really prefer those foam things that you can stick your hand into.

 

I use this method too, this brush is a great tool for the face of the wheel, and then I clean up with the swissvax and ez. Saves a lot of time and is extremely safe on fragile wheel finishes.

It's tough to get the results you expect when you apply additional pressure to the BHB and all the bristles just kind of fold over. This is exactly why I emphasize that it's really only good for well-maintained wheels. I use a separate blue wheel brush that I bought from AutoZone that is flagged and is denser than the BHB.

I really only use the BHB for the vehicles in the family fleet. While my hand may get tiresome from wheels with many spokes, it's only temporary and just live with it. I'd rather get the job done by carrying less brushes with me when going around the vehicle.

 

i bought a boars hair brush at homedepot. same thing but without the handle. i actually got it for free cause there was no price tag and they couldnt figure out where it belonged. it had a hole in the middle and thread inside to screw a broomstick to. maybe you could look there for a cheaper alternative

 

x2 and my only complaint is the lack of density. I used it for the first time yesterday on my rims and was somewhat disappointed. However, my rims have lost there clear coat, so brake dust really is a pain to remove. On my summer rims, the BHB will work well. But it does get the surface free of the major contamination really quickly before moving to your next media for the rims. Overall, I think it's worth a try and definitely has it's place in my wheel arsenal.

Denzil: I saw that blue brush at Autozone and almost bought it the other day. Now that I've tried the BHB, I think I might just go back and get it because it does feel considerably denser.

 

I have a brush that's similar to this, although not a real boar's hair brush. I never use it for wheels as it's so easy to miss pieces. I personally use Phil's inner spoke brush, a regular sponge and then the Swissvax wheel brush.

a boars hair wheel brush and p21s wheel gel is my combo of choice. whether the wheel is lightly soiled or there is a heavy layer or dirt, i'm always able to get all the brake dust off.

I just pre-rinse with a strong stream of water. then spray the p21s wheel gel on, let sit for a minute. then scrub with the brush. I like to make sure the wheel is really wet, so when you scrub it forms a nice thick foam. I rinse to see if i've missed anything. If there is any dirt left i hit that spot again.
