We just got a trail peace of 5000 grit DA sand paper here at the body shop I work at. I just thought it was crazy to see and thought I would share it with you guys. I didn't get to use it yet but I will let you know how it works. It says you have to use 3000 before using the 5000. I have to paint a hood today and I will sand and buff it tomorrow with the new 5000 grit.

Holy crap? Does it even feel gritty at all? My 3000 feels so smooth already.

At what grit do you think compounding would be more effective?

It looks like the purpose behind using the 5000 after the 3000 grit it to eliminate using compound from your step. Which I think is kinda funny cause the 3m trizac system uses a compound, fine polish then an ultra fine polish. They don't have a medium cut compound polish such as menzerna pf2500

    luke093 Welcome to Detailing

I have bunch of foam backed 4000grit. Real smooth and barely scours.

I heard 4000 was great for removing overspray, sure wish I had a few sheets after doing 2 in a row that were wrapped up!

So I got to try out that 5000 grit on a hood I painted. I started going through all the steps to get to 5000. All this was done with the 3M trizac system starting with 1500 grit dry on a d/a image.jpg
Followed by 1500 with a foam pad which makes the 1500 grit act like 2000 grit image.jpg
The 3rd step was 3000 grit, wet this time. You can see the difference between the 2000 and 3000 image.jpg
And finally the 5000 grit. Again you can see the difference between the 3000 and 5000. The 5000 almost looks like the hood was buffed with a wool wheel and heavy compound image.jpg
Once the hood was all sanded with the 5000 grit I wiped the hood clean and started buffing. I went with a green pad and meguires 105. We don't have much to choose from here at work. It's combination worked very well almost ready for a LSP. image.jpg
And here are a few finished pics image.jpg

Over all, the 5000 is nice, it knocks down the 3000 so you don't have to work as hard to bring out the shine. For us here at this body shop it really isn't cost effective. We can finish with 3000, compound wool wheel and move onto the polishing for less money than it would be to buy the 5000 grit. I did enjoy getting a chance to try it out!

Sorry if the pics are not great they were taken with my cell phone

What cheaper? 5K grit or M105? LOL

i see the use of 5K grit, but I don't see the practicality
