This is certainly not your average jetta... For those of you who may not be familiar with the Phaeton, here's a bit of background Info: (Taken From Wikipedia) "The Phaeton was conceived by Ferdinand Piëch, then chairman of Volkswagen Group. Piëch wanted Volkswagen engineers to create a car that would overwhelmingly surpass the German prestige market leaders, Mercedes-Benz and BMW. The decision to release the Phaeton was, in part, a response to Mercedes' decision to compete directly with Volkswagen in the European marketplace with the low-cost A-Class. It was also intended to support the Volkswagen brand image, since the most expensive versions of lesser models, such as the Golf GTI, were starting to cost almost as much as equivalently-sized prestige brands. Although the Volkswagen group already has a direct competitor in the full-sized luxury segment, the Audi A8, the Phaeton is intended to be more of a limousine like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, while the A8 and BMW 7 Series are more sport-oriented. Initial development of the Phaeton, given the internal project code VW611, began with Piëch giving his engineers a list of ten parameters the car needed to fulfill. Most of these specifications were not made known to the public, but a number of them were told to automotive reporters. One of them was that the Phaeton should be capable of being driven all day at 300 kilometres per hour (186 mph) with an exterior temperature of 50 °C (122 °F) whilst maintaining the interior temperature at 22 °C (72 °F). Piëch requested this even though the Phaeton's top speed was electronically limited to 250 kilometres per hour (155.3 mph). Another requirement was that the car should possess torsional rigidity of 37,000 N·m/degree.The Phaeton's platform, the Volkswagen Group D1 platform, is shared with the Bentley Continental GT and Bentley Continental Flying Spur. Certain systems, such as the automatic transmission and some engines, are also shared with the Audi A8. The D1 is a stand-alone steel platform, and was specifically developed for the Phaeton and Bentley Continental." Upon arrival, this Phaeton wasn't in the greatest condition... I'll let the pictures do the talking. Before we got started, a couple small dents had to be taken care of. One on the Driver's door (First pic), Another on the rear driver's side door(Second pic) , and two on the hood. I decided to spend our first day with the car on the Interior. Here's how it looked before: After the Interior was complete, We moved to the exterior. The owner opted for a single stage paintwork correction using Swissvax Cleaner Fluid Professional, which was able to achieve about 85% correction with a single pass. We followed that with Cleaner Fluid Regular to ensure a perfect surface for the wax to adhere, and sealed the job with a single layer of Swissvax applied using the palms of my hands over the entire exterior surface, no applicator pads, the way Swissvax is supposed to be applied! Here's how the paint looked before polishing: After about 60 hours of combined labor hours (Between two people)... The end result! And the finished Interior That's all for that one! Love it! Great job on a fantastic car. Those things are more rare than my W8. And more expensive to fix.
Awesome job! I must admit, I have seen several of those driving around and have always loved them, although...after seeing the design of the interior, I am pretty turned off by it now. I HATE those style buttons and the wheel just doesn't look good to me. You did an excellent job on everything though. Any engine bay pics? I wonder just HOW big that W12 is?
And he's back! Or maybe i was just gone . . . . . nice work man. I never knew that SV Cleaner Fluid allowed for that type of correction. What did you use to finish down the paint to keep from holograms or anything of that nature? Business must be good if you got a second person helping you out now. Still got the M3 Sedan?
Awesome car, and definitely rare. Although I do see one almost every single day as a gentleman in my neighborhood owns one. Fantastic work making this one look like new again.
a guy brought one to a local show up here if i remember correctly, all I remember was him popping the hood and the engine cover was enormous. Good work, the phaeton is a nice land boat for sure.
