Crash course in rock chip repair?

I've noticed I'm getting some rock (paint) chips as a side effect of winter.

I think I'll try to tackle them this summer but I would like as much guidance as possible.

I did a quick search but couldn't come up with too much relevant stuff.

Any input as far as process and precautions is appreciated.

 

I usually first clean the area real well with a bodyshop grade grease and wax remover. If you don't it won't stick well especially if you wax your car. I also use the "credit card" trick, basically get some touch up paint from a body shop, apply it with a brush and glide teh card over the chipped area to sort of "level it". It might smear some so use that same grease and wax remover and remove the smeared excess around the chip, the sooner the better so it don't bond.

Remember put the first layer or two real thin. using the credit card trick always comes out super clean.

I use the toothpick trick myself. Have not tried your method Kaban,you got me interested.Sounds like a pretty solid way to repair.
