I've had the XC 3401 for many years, and recently (when I was detailing my friend's boat) I started hearing/feeling a "grinding" noise. On speed 6, it's as if the backing plate it hitting the polisher. But I don't believe it is.

Is there some sort of maintenance I need to do on this machine? Does it need to be oiled in any way? Any feedback would be great.

I have read with the original Flex 3401 you need to oil the felt ring. The newer ones come already lubed.

I would take the backing plate off and check the gear to see if you see any indications of grinding. You should be able to see if that is the case.

The only "routine" maintenance that I know needs to be followed is cleaning the "pumpkin" out with compresses air every now and then to blow the dust out.

Take the backing plate off and check the felt ring. Needs to be lubricated.

Thanks everyone. I'll do that right now. The only lubricant I have now is what I use to put on the chain on my bicycles. Will this work?

Yes oil the felt ring. Also check the screw/bolt holding plate on to make sure it is tight. Maybe too it was the contour of the boat putting extra pressure on the side.
