I thought I'd go ahead and post this on DB because their are so many dickslaps on the Mustang forums. Paint has been fully corrected with Menz PF via Uber Green pad on Flex 3401 followed by Menz 85rd on a black CCS pad. Next, paint was prepped with SV Cleaner Fluid. LSP: 2x Powerlock (24hr cure times in between) with a coat of Insignis. Thread copy and pasted: about a year and a half ago I got 13" cross drilled and slotted rotors with cobra calipers. every time I get out of my car my brakes smell like somethings burning , so I think it's time to replace my brakes. my question is, what do I need to replace? just the pads? or the rotors too? replacing the pads won't be costly at all, but the rotors will get the price up there. should I get them resurfaced? and when I get new pads, do I just order 03-04 cobra pads? thanks!
Hey Lance the mustang is looking great as always. As you know I own an 04 Black Mustang Gt and have been a mustang forum member for a while so I should be able to help. I suggest you take a look in to Hawk Pads they are a great performance / track pads. Also might want to have your rotors checked for warping and heat cracks if they are present to determine if they need to be replaced you can also do this on your own. Depending on your driving conditions and the kind of bite you want from the pad will depend on dusting and squealing. What brand of rotor / pad combo are you running with the terminator brakes?
New pads and inspect rotors for warping. Cross drilled and sloted rotors can not be cut just replaced.
sloted rotors possibly can be sanded but dont think they can be cut couse of slots can brake and probably will brake cutter. +1 on Hawk pads, i have EBC green stuff and they dust like crazy. make sure you check slider pins and lube them. if your brakes dont disengage properly they might be dragging pads and thats what could be cousing smell from overheating brakes. do rotors have any black lines on them? maybe look into ceramic pads from either hawk or EBC, they usually dust less but initial bite is not as good as on regular pads usually im in process of replacing my dual piston calipers with 4 piston, might get new pads as well, definitely not EBC green stuff this time
To be honest, I have no idea what brands they are. I bought them from a dude who apparently didn't do ethical business and wasn't registered. He was pretty much sketchy. In the end he ripped me off, I hope he felt better ripping off a 16 year old at the time. Nonetheless the brakes have been amazing. I've been talking to some good Mustang friends from my club and they suggested get the blank OEM Cobra rotors and just the cheapest pads available. I'm going to be selling my baby in about 6 months and picking up a Z06. I'm in the process of fixing some things on my car to prep it for sale. Biggest thing I'm scared of is having to buy new tires for the car before it gets sold. My Invos are already in great shape and are pretty expensive, they also look better and ride better than any tire out there (not to mention the rear tires are fat as hell :claping. They will also be a 'pro' to a potential buyer. Edit: I forgot to mention, an hour ago I went to a shop here in Starkville and they said the brakes are perfectly fine (after they drooled a bit). I just need to find out what the burning smell is. Ughhhh!!!!
maybe its the catalytic converter? or something along the exhaust system? if theres a crack somewhere on it, it'll be burning for sure.
ah right lol but yeah just a possibility that it may not be the brakes that creating the smell =p you may even want to see if theres plastic left on anything that generates heat as it may be burning those
Did they lift the car up to see if your possibly burning oil, or any other fluids? Just because you don't see it under where your parked doesn't mean something isn't leaking. Just a suggestion.
I would just replace the Pads and Rotors on your Cobra Brakes. RotorPros has Rotors for The best price. Autozone also Lifetime warranty Brake pads!!!
So they checked your calipers to make sure none were partially locked or frozen? Also not sure how your ebrake is set up on mustangs but on my GTO they are inside the rear rotors. Could be one is hung up or frozen stuck and dragging enough for you to get the burnt brake smell. If you need to replace pads +1 for Hawk just put front pads on the G8 and it feels like it stops fater than with the factory pads.
I like hawk pads, but i get past the marketing and buy Performance Friction Brakes, look at who uses them and the uses........ in fact, they dont market, or advertise as much as EBC, Hawk or others. But a few of the small organizations that use them. Nascar, Indy, F1, Roush, and some others......... I use them on my cars. Awesome pads. Performance Friction - Media porterfield is the shhhhhhhhh...t too.
Hahah I love how you've commented on my LSP setup everytime I post it. Isn't it awesome though?! The beading and sheeting is insane. My paint looks like it has made boils cause the beading is so tall and round :thumb: it is infact a v6. dad bought it/it's my first car. I just told him I wanted a mustang, I didn't know much about them so I didn't specify a GT. like I said earlier, going to sell it soon for a Z06. Just fixing the small things here and there on my car (i.e. fogs don't work cause I hit a parking barrier I need to rewire them, fully fasten the hood scoops etc). When I go home for the weekend soon I'm going to get a very nice shop specializing in Mustangs to check out the smell. The shop here in Starkville yesterday said my brakes were fine. If the smell is coming from the front of the car I think it might have to do with a leaking fluid liek someone mentioned earlier. A long time ago when I was getting my oil changed the dude said my tranny oil pan is sightly leaking but nothing big at all (at the time), he said to just watch it. Now that it's been a few months I'll have to take a look at it
