i normally use these products when i do paint correction (with a rotary) heavy cut : s17+3m Wool Pad medium cut : s17 + 3m waffled polishIt polishing pad (grey) Burnishing : s40 + LC CCS grey pad lately ive been trying combining s17+s40 on 3m polishIt polishing pad as an intermediary step between my medium cut and my burnishing/finishing step, as sometimes s40 on LC CCS grey is not enough to clean all the imperfections left from my medium cut step. Dont get me wrong s17, is great, and most of the time it is able to produce a near perfect surface after my medium cut stage, but sometimes there are still that extra 1 or 2 percent of really fine (final than hair) swirls that i need to get rid of. whats ur take on this guys? am i using the right pads for my polishes or should i use other pads when using these excellent polishes from Scholl? any input would be very appreciated regards, Bob
i meant "finer than a human hair scratches/swirls, the kind that u need to put your eyes on the right angles and under proper lighting to see" sorry for the typo
I have never used Scholl polishes so I can't give a fair judgement, I'm a proponent of uber pads for any polish I use. I know Dave (dsms) has been doing some Scholl testing, he might be able to provide some solid input. I think Ken (911Fanatic) has also used Scholl so he might be good as well.
I use Scholl and are very satisfied with it. I mainly use Scholl and Über (detailersdomain) pads, and they works great for me. Is it the old or the new formula of the S17 you are using? I just bought the new one, named S17+ and its like heaven. You can tripple the time you can use it without it drying up. And if you want a good heavy cut compound you should try the new Scholl S3 Gold edition, they have added some more oil and its a bit more aggressive then the S03+. And the compound are really smooth and great working with. My favorite pads are: Scholl S3 GE + Scholl Yellow, Scholl Orange and Über Orange Scholl S17+ + Same as over. Scholl S30+ + ûber Green
thanks Chas and Thomas for the info. and Thomas, looks like im gonna be ordering some uber pads this week thanks alot for the guide. btw i think the one i had now is the old formula (s17), and yes, it does dry up fast, but i kinda like it dryin up that fast, bcoz it kinda signals me on when to stop working on the product (i always worry that i might be working the product too long, hence this characteristic actually improves my time efficiency), but come to think of it, it would be nice to get a slightly longer working time out of the versatile s!7. if u dont mind me asking, how is the cut of the s3 on the orange pad compared to the cut of the s17 on the wool cutting pad? I see the benefit of using the wool pad in terms of heat management over a foam cutting pad, but with the amount of debris it generates and the amount of product they use to get the correction that i want is a bit too much (mind you, i normally smear the s17 around the mid portion of the wool pad, i'm not sure its the proper thing to do though).
o yeah one more thing, how much difference is there (cutting/correction ability, working time, etc) between s30 and s40?
I can see your point regarding saving some time, but still i rather have longer worktime and be able to run it smooth, then short time and dry it out But hey, thats just me. Regarding the comparison between S3 GE + Oragne and S17 + Wool, I cant help you much, since i´ve just tried the last combo. And i really dont like using wool pad, and as you prob know the Scholl wool pad is not that aggressive as othe wool pad´s. Here you got a pic of one pass with the new S17+ and Scholl Wool: After 3 passes: And with the Scholl S30+ and Green Über pad: And here you can see one pass with S17+ and Scholl Yellow Cutting pad: But i´ve actually never tried the fist combo, but i will do it on my next detail, but dont know when it wil be. And i must say that i rather prefer regular pads then wool pads, since i think they are more "difficult" working with. Don´t get the same "feeling" compared to the regular pads. When i use Scholl products, after i have primed the pad i only use 3 small dots of polish for each panel/pass. Well, the bottle of S40 is still almost full and i´m on my second bottle of S30, so you can see that i rather prefer S30, then S40. But again I haven´t tried out the S40 that much, just some times when i´m trying to get rid of some holograms, but for that job i love the 3M UltraFina and the blue 3M pad. I would say that the S30(And S17+) is great as a light correction as a one-step and final finish, if the paint aren´t too soft. Using S40 as a one-step will not do much, but as a final-step it might be better.(Will also test this some more on my next detail) Sorry for not be able to help more. Best regards Tomas.
wow thanks ALOT for the comprehensive info mate, i really really apprectiate it! i will post some of the work that i did today on a smaraged black w124, as always i used s17+wool pad as my heavy cut step then s17 on a 3m polishing pad as the medium cut, and then i finish with s40 on LC CCS grey pad. i think i might need to use another polishing pad for my s40 step cause although s40 on a finishing pad works great in making the paint "jump", it does nothing to the tiny bit of extremely fine hairline swirls left by the medium cut step.
Step up to a little bit firmer finishing pad like uber green, I promise it will finish out flawless with S40 or even S30+.
Thanks Porta and Tomas, u guys are great, im gonna buy myself some firmer pad to use with the s40 to follow up my S17 medium cut step. Something with the likes of Uber green maybe?
S30+ and the orange Scholl pad is a great combination, the same regarding S17+ and the black pad from Scholl.. On this detail, we used S17+ with the black pad from Scholl. We used pretty high rpm's and low pressure. Take a look: Volvo V40 with Scholl Concepts S17 - Detailing World
sorry guys for not having fisited the forum for like two weeks due to the holidays and a lil emergency happened at home. anyway i dont know where u can get scholl polishes in the USA, but if im not mistaken a forum supporter (Ketil) shipped them for some guys over here, as I recall he goes by the name Pirex < cmiiw > as for me I live in Indonesia, and luckily there's a company over here that licensed the product from SchollConcepts GmBH and produce them locally so i can get them at a reasonable price. So cost effective they are to me, I have been trying to perfect my technique in using these polishes so I can use them exclusively
@Kristoffer, amazing work on the Volvo there, if you dont mind me asking, how many complete passes / cycles did it take you with s17 on the finishing pad to get that correction? that is simply an amazing job , Mate! ps: it is a humbling experience for me to learn that all that correction and perfect finish was achieved by using just s17 on a finishing pad, WOW! a quote from one Greek philosopher is appropriate for these kind of moments , "all i know for sure, is that i know nothing."
The best pads for Scholl polishes are the Scholl pads as they were developed in conjunction. I have a few new pads and backing plates if you're interested. The Scholl lineup delivers
