My 6" backing plate is stuck on my Makita 9227. I hit the 'lock' button on the rotary to unscrew the backing plate, and the plate won't budge. Any thoughts?
man sorry to hear that but, in the words of Tim "The Tool Man" Taylor "more power". If you can't get it to budge you could try and cut it off some how with a razor knife of somthing similar.
i've had my backing get stuck on my makita 9227 before. It was like i could apply all my strength to it and it wouldn't budge but what i found to work was: while holding the lock button you need to give the backing a quick firm twist to break it free and from then it should start to unscrew. That's what worked for me and that should hopefully work for you.
+1. I've had mine get stuck before as well and I found that holding the lock in and giving the bp a sharp tug was enough to loosen it.
funny thing is when tightening the backing plate it's not a screw or a bolt where you can continue to over tighten it and what not. It spins on and stops bam! Like a dead end street but i guess after a while of being used the heat has to do with maybe the threads in the backing plate expanding and contracting which are why it gets a little stuck on the machine.
Once you get it off put a dab of anti-seize on the threads and you should not have the issue again as it will provide a bit of lubrication to remove the BP again the next time.
