ive seen people on here use water with soap as a clay lube and i was wondering how it stacks up against a regular qd clay lube is it better or just as good? also how much soap do you add to the water? thanks
You can use soap and water, but typically it will cause the clay to break down prematurely. If you are the kind of guy who uses the piece one time and bins it, then have it. If you like to use it one more than one car, I'd suggest a proper clay lube.
As 911 stated, the water will degrade the clay. Using a dedicated clay lube is the best way to go if you plan on using your clay more than once. A great economical clay lube is ONR diluted.
I had issues with ONR as a clay lube in the past, it tends to marr the paint with sonus green fine clay and requires a polish afterwords. something must be wrong although I am sure I have enough ONR in the pressure sprayer more than required for a QD ratio. will try both "ONR and soap/water" on Friday and report back.
Interesting. You should always polish after claying anyways because even with the correct dilution, claying will leave behind some marring. You can check the ONR product page and it will tell you the correct ratios to use for wash, QD, and clay lube. Give that a shot and you should see less marring.
I always just use soap and water as a my clay lube. I use just a small amount at the bottom of a spray bottle and the rest water. What 911 stated is true but clay simply just does not last long enough for me to care if it deteriorates over time.
I normally uses a soap solution but then again I also usually cut my clay into small pieces and turf them after each vehicle :thumb:
I would not take a chance. I use Meg's Quick Detailer but would reach for another detailing when I run out. I have heard too many comments about negative experiences using ONR so I will skip that.
I usually make clay lube of my own - 2 oz of ONR and about 1/2 oz Megs #00 High Tech Wash, which makes clay solution very slippery, and never degraded any of my clay bars...
ONR played nicely today, no marring from claying I heated the clay in a bucket of water so that might have helped! 13 hours so far and looks like an all nigher! back to the garage :crasy:
