Moderate swirls on BMW 135i.

I searched for a while on this and couldnt find anything close to my topic. Last week I cleaned, clay bar'd, polished and sealed my car. I used Menzerna Super Intesive Polish and finished it with Menzerna Super Finish. I looked at the swirls at every panel and made sure they were going away with every pass I made. I did three passes through out the whole car at the highest speed of 1.2. I then finished it with Klasse sealant. One week later I walk out to my car from the mall and I see swirls shinning at me from the sun. :hopmad::hopmad::hopmad::shead::shead: What did I do wrong?

Didn't use IPA after Menzerna. Most likely the polishing oils that Menzerna uses filled in the swirls. Have you washed the car since then? Could it be wash induced marring?

 

Whats IPA? Havent washed it nor touched it. I have no idea if it could be from marring from post washings. I'll need to take pics.

IPA is isopropyl alcohol. It removes polishing oils after you're doing correcting a panel. You spray it, and then wipe it off like a QD.

 

damn how did I miss this? I found an article on detailed image.com and I followed it. I don't remember seeing any step with ipa. What does qd mean? Is there a correct polishing article that you fellas know of that can help me? Also, how frequent can I polish/wax my car safely?

 

1) What color is your BMW? Metallic or non-metallic?
2) What machine were you using? DA? Rotary? Forced DA?
3) What was your pad combo with your SIP and Power Finish?
4) What speeds on both of those steps?

The above, and likely some other questions, will help you answer your dilemma better.

I would say it's safe to polish the car once a year, maybe once every 6 months for a good 5 years or so before you need to worry about UV damage. But this depends on your process, products, how thick the clear coat was from the factory.. and many other things that play a part in removing clear coat..

 

1) Porter cable random orbital 7336
2) orange pad with polish and finish with black pad.
3) Sealant was with green pad.
4) all speeds were 1.2
5) Monaco Blue (dark blue)

Just tried taking pics and its not working out at night. Will try tomorrow.

 

Just read a good portion of this article and realised what those "small like rain drops" look like. BREAKTHROUGH!!!

 

Having a look here, I have a few concerns. Your polishing steps look fine but why would you apply your sealant with the green pad? Even if you are using an AIO like Klasse, you should be using a pad like LC Gold that has no mechanical cut meaning zero ability to induce marring. The other concern I have is that your speeds are very low and that your polish may not have broken down completely which will induce marring itself. When you are using the PC, you want to do the following....
1. Apply two or three pea sized drops of polish to the pad.
2. Spread the polish (with the machine OFF) over a 2' x 2' area.
3. Turn the machine on(with the pad ON the paint) and spread the polish over the same area at speed 2.
4. Turn the machine up to 5 and work in a up and down then side to side motion until the polish goes clear. This is your indication that the polish has broken down completely. Turn the machine off with the pad ON the paint.

Doesn't look like it. Maybe it's dried polish residue? Since you didn't wipe it down with IPA...

And as above posters have said, you're not gonna get any correction with speeds 1-2. Gotta bump it up to 5-6 to see any kind of a result.

 

How do I know if I didnt break through? Im freaking out! I obviously cant polish again, so do I wait another 6 months and do it right?

You would know if you went through your clear coat. And with speeds that low, unless you had your entire weight on it for 15 minutes, I think you're OK!
