So, this weekend while at Best Buy, shopping to replace the stuipd camera I bought last month, I was stalking this car - I mean, waiting in the parking lot for my girlfriend to come out and the owner of this brand new GT comes out and sees my business card in his window. Yep, that's it in the red circle. I do this frequently and get about 30% return for my efforts - I take 20 cards per day and distribute them all. Never had anybody complain, yet!!! Anyway, I talked with him for a while. He went so far as to pop the hood and everything short of leaving his girl and taking me for a ride. So, he just called me and wants to do a standard, weekly wash but wants to start out with a complete detail. The car is surprisingly almost perfect from a finish perspective. So, think this will be a chance for me to try a few layers of my newest sealant of choice with a couple of layers of Devine. Trolling pays!!!!
I can't make myself do it. When someone leaves their card or flyer on my car in a parking lot, it infuriates me, and guarantees that I will never do business with that person. That's just me.
I've always WANTED to do it, but to maintain a reputation (as a younger guy) I think it may be more detrimental to that. I'm not sure. Between that and rarely having the time to wash my own car -- I just don't know! Maybe I should start trying it.
I sometimes find it cheesy. But, oddly, I've done my research - I typically perform gap analysis so that I can accurately determine effect and importance. Those who often find this to be irritating are those who come out to find something on their wiper. First, they are irritated because they immeidately think it's a parking ticket or note from someone that hit their car and left. Then there comes the irritation with having to get back out of the car and retrieve whatever is on their car because it was left on the wiper and they didn't see it until after getting in the car. I levae the card right above their door handle, in the window seal and, again, thus far, have never gotten negative response.
I haven't done that in a while. Phiadelphia has super strict laws on flyer distribution, that it's not even funny. In fact, I got the rudest phone call ever about my flyer distribution earlier this year, that I looked into the laws and was lucky all I got was the nasty-@$$ call. So now I don't even slip the occasional card in the city I will probably troll the burbs this weekend or the following weekend.
Are your laws specific to biz cards?? I don't do a sweep. Just, as I'm out about on my day, I'll slip the 20 cards over the course of my daily errands and activities.
Me too, I throw the card away, same with the pizza flyers left at my door at home! Now I will walk up to someone and start talking to them about their car and tell them I do detailing, cold calls have never bothered me! what's the worse than can happen ? they say no thanks!
no idea on card laws. i did a sweep of like 8-10 blocks of the area I live in. only 1 person complained. no calls or anything else. Most of my business is outside of the city anyways, so it's not a really big deal. There are so many hack detail shops in Philly, that I could care less. I do need to try and hit the ritzy areas in the spring though!
Yeah, like I said, I don't make a day of it. Just as I pass the cars I think would be a potential client.
I have been arrested for assault due to a guy putting a flyer under my wiper blade. the charges were dropped, but I HATE people touching my car.
I wouldn't mind doing it, but some people might take it as "this guy thinks I don't know how to take care of my baby". I like the fact that you are selective about the cars you place the cards on. I think that's the reason why you get that high of a return. I like that you place it right above the door handle, 'cause I hate when people place flyers/cards on my wipers.
I have my standard biz cards and the cards I place for this venture. I think how the card reads is what makes the difference. I can see some people thinking you thought their car looked bad - even if some do - by placing a card on their car. In fact, I make it a point to pass cars that look worse for the wear. And, I also take exception to people fooling with my cars/bikes. If I find something nicely placed in a window seal, I'm not going to fly off the handle as I would if I found something in the wiper - did they lend across my fender, slap the wiper down, bend it, etc.
