ampbmw detailed: 1984 Porsche Carrera (Guards Red)

But, the good news is this is the longest write up so once this is out of the way the rest are alot shorter.

okay, that sayed this was the main concern for the customer. This was his most recent addition to his collection, and therefore was the one with the most marring from the previous owner's automatic-wash addiction (appearantly), and was in need for some heavy correction work.

Being a 1 stage paint I knew I had some frustration and challenges my way, as well as the inability to show all the imperfections on film. I knew the customer was coming by mid day to see the progress, hence why I have a lot of the panels taped in half to show him what he was paying for. Needless to say in person the correction was EXTREMELY impressive for a 1 stage...I've never seen a 1 stage turn out as well as that one did...okay stay with me this is gonna be a long story.

The paint was very dull in person, and the marring made the paint have a greyish tint to it,
(look around the lights)


but its just so hard to capture it on film...I do have some pretty good pics of the change made

AFTER I hit below the tape on the hood with SIP and 85rd
Compare it to the bumper around the lights:

The vehicle was covered with swirls and scratches wow, but you guys sure did a great job the vehicle looks incredable.

One question, what did you use on the rims? What kind of clay is that? Oh and really curious waht did you use to polish the tight spaces like between the bumper and the plastic peases and that spoiler? Just curious.

haha you crack me up...rims were polished up with Adam's Metal 1 followed by metal 2

Swissvax Paint Rubber (best IMO and is NOT auto magic clay! its made out of the US)

we used the 4 inch CCS everywhere possible, and taped off extremely well to go into spaces with confidence.

Hmm did any of those marring come after claying? For those type of paints I usually have to use a softer clay bar like the yellow one I received from FMINUS. And where did you clay that had black coming off? Near the wheel? Usually when I clay it is more orange. And what do you like better the 106FA or 85rd?

 

I'm sure I marred while claying...it didnt matter b/c it already had swirls like this...


that seen I wasn't particularly worried about new marks i just needed a clean surface for SIP
(btw...underside of this car had a painted "rhino-lining" type surface typically seen on older cars and therefore we didnt polish it it was cleaned with a tar remover and waxed only)
and where the paint stopped there was no road debris...thats just alot of contaminants!

as for FA or rd....the facts are FA is a 9/10 on shine and rd is 10/10 and when i get results like this w/ rd....
...why change?

plus i just dont like the way FA finishes on darkr colors compared to rd

Excellent finish there. Lots of little nuances on that car for machining.

Can you tell me what SIP is please? Am I right in thinking you put together an IP/85RD mix on the pad to give some cut but to maximise gloss at the same time.

Has any of the car been re-sprayed at all, or was it original paint? I'm trying to get some insight into possible differences between old and new Porsche paint.

SIP=Super Intensive Polish (PO83 code named) I think yall UK'ers call it IP anyways cuz of the label...no its quite strong of a polish and will leave holograms like crazy IF NOT BROKEN DOWN CORRECTLY...but if done right you can finish almost LSP so close that a quick quick pass w/ 85rd=sheer perfect correction on BLACK PAINT even!

no re spray original. 1 stage porsche paint is like most if not every other 1 stage: no clear.

BUT i will say this paint behaved much better than most other 1 stages i've played with (BMW not that i'm naming names )

Well we have Power Gloss (cut 10/10 I think), but I'm not sure this is SIP's equivalent. I've not been aware of anyone finishing LS ready with this!

Menzerna 3.02, worked well, long work time - LS ready. Could this be it?

 

Wow, that is very very nice work! Beautiful work, red is almost more rewarding than black in most cases!

 

yes SIP is PO85rd3.02 shortened to PO83 as to not throw ppl off into thinking its PO85rd.

yes LS ready on silver and a stones throw away on dark cars if broken down properly
