RPM options on a Rotary?

I’ve never used a rotary, but I was checking out the specs of the Makita 9227CB (UK spec 230v). Apparently it has 6 speed options: 600-900-1500-2100-2700-3000rpm. Now reading up on Clark’s details for Polished Bliss, he also uses a Makita 9227 (afaik a UK CB spec), but he quotes other speeds he uses, which differ from those quoted above, such as 1700rpm. So is there a way of feathering the trigger to obtain in-between speeds? Is this not tiring on the old trigger finger, and if so, can you lock the trigger to whatever in-between rpm you’ve chosen to work at?

I see the Makita’s preset speeds only include about 2 that would be commonly used: 900rpm and 1500rpm (maybe 600rpm for spreading the polish), and there are other rotaries which have a greater number of preset speeds, like the Milwaukee AP12QE: 900-1167-1433-1700-1967-2233-2500rpm (4 commonly used rpm’s). So when choosing a rotary, is this a factor to consider, or does the trigger feathering on the Makita work just fine?

On the Makita, there are actually three small increments on the dial between the listed speeds. Each one is 200 rpm. Thats how Clark is able to use 1700 rpm.

    That explains, thanks!

So with those 3 in-between increments, rpm's available are: 900-1100-1300-1500-1700-1900 etc...? That's good to know.

+1 on Ken's post, the speed dial is indexed allowing you to select increments between the preset speeds on each setting ;)

I've been trying to find out something out about this for a long time now. I just never asked the right person the right question...Then the answer just falls into my lap...:thumb:

    Thank you, 911Fanatic...:worship2:
