So I know there is a thread about Dells right now and I can sense my Dell gradually going down hill fast (not turning on all the time and losing some of my stored items). I have had it for 5 years now and have used it mainly for college and with graduating in May I am going to purchase something new for work. I will be going into finance probably with the government or in financial advising/consulting. I hear having a Mac isn't good for business purposes, what are your thoughts? I would honestly prefer a Mac if it is good with business.
Yes a Mac will be fine, anything you can't install on a Mac you can get a program that will let you install windows and install the program anyway.
I will be honest with you there are a lot of things that just aren't as easy on a Mac. You can get the whole office suite but it just isn't as good. I am pretty handy with excel, and sometimes I find myself switching to windows for Excel. Other than that...I am a pretty happy mac camper. Also remember that Macs cost more to replace, but are just "funner" to use in general.
I'm on my third Mac Laptop. They are just so user friendly. You don't get viruses and they just don't crash. Well, mine never have. Or my wifes.
yeah I am thinking about getting the Mac before May so I can still get the student discount on it. I am just worried like you said about stuff like excel documents being different, but if I can run windows I would be down for that. I truly am looking for more fun out of my computer.
Mac's are known to break after the warranty is out though... If you want a very good laptop go to custom laptops - XOTIC PC - custom notebooks - gaming laptops - gaming notebooks (I almost bought one of their laptops (very nice) high end products)..The performance of an Alienware w/o the price tag).
I'm a PC person but I honestly don't see anything wrong with using a Mac for business. I honestly think that if it is business, you could really go either way.
As a bona fide Apple guy myself, I'll have to put my vote in for a Mac. NO DOUBT. Been a Mac user since high school for it's design capabilities, but have been running a business on it for 4 years with no problem. Only thing PC about me now are my initials. :giggle: My mother, father and brother had PC's and I was always the one called when they caught a virus or got stuck with something. Over the past two years I've convinced them to go Mac and I haven't heard from them since. As was said prior, you can run anything on a Mac that you can on a PC whether it be a full Mac version or a PC version run through Boot Camp. As far as purchasing before May, if you can hold out until like August you'll be eligible for the student discount PLUS, more than likely, a free iPod. They've run that as a back to school special for the past few years. Hope this helps :thumb:
Mac all the way! Everything about it so much more user friendly. IMO, I actually think iWork is far more superior than Office.
A few years ago, my father threw away all of the PCs in our house and replaced them all with Macs. So far, the following has happened: 1) He bought one of those iMacs, which has at this point stalled to an almost complete halt. 2) My mom got a Macbook, which completely crashed a few weeks ago after having it for two years. She did buy a new Apple replacement. 3) My brother has a Mac Pro and he had so many issues with it, that he switched back to PCs. 4) My wife has a Macbook and it's crashed a few times, but seems to be running OK the past few months. It is very slow though, she uses it for work. I hate to be the Debbie Downer in a sea of people who love it. But at times, I feel like Apple is the equivalent of Zaino. People that love it are so hardcore about it and will never want to hear anything negative about it. With all of the examples above, it's odd that no one has ever admitted to having issues with their Apple. If my laptop was to currently crash on me, I don't know what I would replace it with. Vista is shite, so that's out. And Windows XP has become old hat. I'd love to have a MacBook Pro, but the price is steep and I'd be worried I'd have issues with it.
If you want something reliable, look at the Dell Latitude or Precision models of notebooks. They are business-grade laptops. I worked in the Global space at Dell for many years, and dealt with Fortune 50 companies. When these guys choose laptops for their entire enterprise, they put these things through some extreme tests. I would personally never buy the consumer line of products from Dell. Mainly because of the fact that technology changes very quickly on those, and your warranty will be in India. However, since most companies put their custom image on their enterprise laptops (and desktops), Dell will have them for sale for at least 12-15 months. That means that Dell is VERY picky as to what goes inside these machines. They all comes standard with a 3-year next day business warranty. All repairs and phone support is based out of the US. I would highly recommend you give them a look. Especially in the Dell Outlet you can do some great bargains. I don't work for Dell now, just giving you my honest opinion.
Go to Mac and ditch all Windows junk. I use OpenOffice for all my office stuff now and Mozilla and Safari for my web browsing. So much happier. Once my Dell take a dump I'm getting a Mac for sure.
Hey P1et, have you tried Windows 7? I'm running right now on my laptop (the one I use for school) and it's been pretty damn stable comparable to Vista. Although it's based off of Vista, it runs pretty clean and some of the new features in W7 are pretty nice. For those of you who have suggested Mac, I wish you would explain why you're suggesting Mac instead of just saying "Mac!"... know what I mean? It's always good to have an explanation to an opinion.
