Need Help - in the middle with Menzerna

I am trying to detail my Jet Black 330cic before I turn it in to the dealer as my lease ends on the 17th.

I am using a PC. Here's what I have done so far.
Washed with CG Citrus Wash
Clayed
Washed with MS Duragloss
PC with 4" Orange Pad and Menzerna SIP (2 passes about 3 minutes each)
Next with 4" White Pad and Menzerna 106Ff (2 passes about 3 minutes)

I had taped the section off to see if I could tell the difference.
The positive is that it most of the scratches & swirls came out, but the polished section looked much lighter black than the side not touched. I am hesitant on doing more until I hear from you guys. Will the sealant bring the dark color back, or am I doing something wrong?

Can you take a picture? Also wipe the polished section down with some isopropyl alcohol.

If it was me, I would just apply a heavy glaze to it. No sense in fully correcting the paint to turn it in. Dealership wont be able to tell a difference.

 

Is the polished side actually "lighter" or is it "brighter" now that it has been polished? Looks like you've done everything right so far. Do you have some halogens you could use to see if there is any micromarring in the paint?

 

Well, I tried to take a few pictures, guess I don't have that technique down. Here they are. I wiped the polished section down with 50/50 isopropyl alcohol & distilled water. What do you mean by heavy glaze. Products please. Thanks

 

I think lighter, although fewer scratches. Pictures just posted.

 

Also tried #M Perfect-It Ultrafine Machine Polish after the SIP just to see if the result was any better. Not much difference.

 

I'm thinking the polish didn't do what it need to and break down properly since poster is using a PC with Menzerna. I know you can get good results with a PC and Menzerna but it is certainly harder to do. Might try going over the area with a white pad and 106ff again for a longer time and see if that doesn't bring back the shine. Also I agree with D&D about the glaze.

Between the orange pad and not breaking the polish down completely that is what happens.
Use sip with the white pad then white pad with 106fa, it will take some time with the pc as mentioned by JL.

 

Or as Dan mentioned, a heavy glaze. Try Megs #80, Speed Glaze.

 

its micro marring isnt it?

for time and moneys sake just fill it in with the glaze like stated above.

but why doesnt the pc breakdown sip good? would he have been better off with the pc on 6 with a white LC pad?

 

The orange pad is leaving some marring and also the polished wasn't completely broken down. The pc will break down the pc if given the correct amount of time. As far as the white pad, yes it should have been used to go back over the above pic on a white pad, maybe even twice then followed up with a finishing pad and 106fa.

Thanks for all your help. Since I am turning the car in soon, I went ahead and applied Poorboy's Black Hole, a glaze I already had, then topped that off with a QD. It looks good.

What have I learned?
- Well, I thought 3 minutes for each 18" section was long enough for SIP, but I guess not. Actually it looked pretty good after applying the SIP, but worse after applying the 106FA.
- I got brave and took my brand new Makita out of the box and put a Meg's light blue pad on it with Ultrafina. That lasted about 15 seconds, couldn't control the Makita. Back in the box and its going up for sale along with my UK 3M backing plate, and US 3M 4" backing plate.

Thats funny. But don't give up on the Makita just yet. First of all you tried it for the "first time" at the wrong time. You shouldn't have even thought about using it after all the stress of the previous methods. Read up on rotary use & watch some of the vids on here,and give it another try. Good luck.

 

Dont sell it. Maybe you can get some lessons from someone.
