I am polishing to get the surface bright. Also would I wash, clay, THEN IPA, before polish?

Lizard, the IPA solution removes polishing oils. There are two reasons one might wipe down the surface with an IPA solution:

    (1) The oils present in polishes tend to hide swirls and defects. You might apply an IPA solution in order visibly inspect the results of your polishing.

    (2) The oils present in polishes may interfere with the bonding of some synthetic sealants. If you have chosen a synthetic sealant as your LSP (e.g., Zaino or Duragloss), you will want to wipe down the surface with an IPA solution.

Ok, cool. But don't you want to get the car a clean as possible before applying any polish as well?

That is what washing and claying is for.

Yes, there are three reasons to do alcohol wipe downs. The 3rd is to clean the paint prior to beginning the polishing process. This will help remove any remaining wax, oils, grease, silicon, etc.

Cool, thanks. Also how do you go about cleaning clear bras and chrome trim?

We've given you a ton of information here, lizardloren. So much in fact, I'm confused! LOL! You are polishing to brighten the paint you said. Just to double check, what steps will you be taking?

wash, dry, clay (Meguiar's) , polish (scrachX 2.0), and Wax (NXT)

I can also do alcohol wipe down, if you think its really necessary.

The IPA wipedown is a good habit to get into. It only takes a few minutes and could be the difference between rolling your car into the sun and being very happy or very pissed off. Make sure you post pics, before and after. Happy detailing!

If you're looking for a good start up kit, then Griots Garage makes a really decent kit that includes all the clay, polish, wax, and orbital buffer (safer for people who dont have much experience). dont take that as a dis, I started out witha griots orbital and I love that machine.
